About Coen Van Iwaarden

There is a Dutch saying that goes: ‘A better world starts with yourself’. In my case, it was the other way around: ‘A better self starts with the world’. I grew up with first-world comfort in my native country the Netherlands. When I was 17, I went to Argentina for a year. Not the capital, but a small city in the center of the country. I went alone and spoke no Spanish. Cellphones and the internet didn't yet exist. I lived for a year with an Argentine family with eight brothers and sisters, sharing their many joys as well as their worries amidst an economic recession that would soon turn into a dramatic country default. That year triggered my senses and set me on a path to learn more about the world around me and about myself. I have not stopped exploring ever since. It has taken me to live, study, and work in many different countries, meeting incredible people along the way.I feel naturally drawn to people who dig in, ask questions, and work wholeheartedly on a topic they care about. I value a job well done: high-quality, with results beyond a mere 'hit-and-run'. I work on sustainable agriculture and trade because they are key topics of our era. Like in other sectors, agriculture and trade operate on systems with rules and incentives that lead to unsustainability. We need to change these systems if we are to secure a safe and dignified world for all of us.I contribute to this process by taking on complex issues, such as how to improve responsible water management in agriculture by engaging the entire value chain, bridging gaps between growers worldwide, retail clients in Europe, and governments; or how to make sure that the voice of workers -out in the field, in the packhouse- is genuinely taken into account and acted upon. We're making progress, but many challenges remain. In this work, I enjoy building partnerships in which one plus one adds up to three. It's the only way to achieve the scale and speed we need. Conservation, restoration, and regeneration are gaining momentum, and rightfully so. It gives me energy to know that my work will focus more on these topics in the coming years.People who have worked with me will describe me as resourceful, upbeat, and communicative. I love language and storytelling in all its forms; books, articles, a beautiful sentence or a quote, photography, and music. They are a source of joy and inspiration for me.

Nature's Pride imports 200+ types of exotic fruits and vegetables from hundreds of growers in 50+ countries. It distributes to hundreds of clients in Europe, reaching 25+ countries.I serve as a trusted advisor to executives at Nature’s Pride, to growers, clients, and other stakeholders. As Nature’s Pride's lead on water and biodiversity, I am responsible company’s water strategy, including water stewardship initiatives and its biodiversity policy. I pioneered water and biodiversity audits in our value chain and developed an in-house water training for our buyers. I regularly speak at conferences and was invited to share our water stewardship value chain approach at the United Nations in New York.I was part of the team that executed a Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD) in 2022, which is the foundation for our 2028 People & Nature Strategy, released early 2024. • Dutch-Argentine Chamber Of Commerce
    Manager
    Dutch-Argentine Chamber Of Commerce Sep 2007 - Aug 2010
    Buenos Aires, Argentina
I thoroughly enjoyed working in this position at the Chamber of Commerce. It provided me with a steep learning curve about international business and trade in practice. I worked closely with all types of businesses: from large Dutch multinationals operating in Argentina to expert medium-sized companies and innovative start-ups. I learned what it means to run a business in a challenging context. During my time at the Chamber, the number of members doubled to over 100 and the Chamber’s balance sheet improved considerably. During this period I also started to deeper analyze sustainability in international trade with a specific focus on agriculture. This materialized into a major publication, launched for the Chamber’s 90th Anniversary, which was later also translated into Spanish.
  • Ford Foundation
    Research Assistant
    Ford Foundation May 2007 - Sep 2007
    Buenos Aires, Argentina
My political economy professor at Torcuato Di Tella University invited me to participate in this major project about political, economic, and security issues in Latin America. • Royal Netherlands Embassy
    Consultant
Royal Netherlands Embassy Mar 2005 - Jun 2005
    Buenos Aires, Argentina
After my internship, the Netherlands Embassy in Buenos Aires hired me to analyze economic integration in Latin America’s Southern Cone. I analyzed free trade agreements from different perspectives (economic, institutional, legal, and political) and conducted interviews with diplomats, economists, and attorneys in the region. The final report I wrote was distributed to the Dutch embassies in the region and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague.
  • Royal Netherlands Embassy
    Economic And Commercial Department Intern
Royal Netherlands Embassy Sep 2004 - Dec 2004
    Buenos Aires, Argentina
I felt fortunate to be selected among many candidates to be an intern at the Embassy during this fascinating period in Argentine history. I contributed to reports on Argentina's post-2001 default debt restructuring, impact on international trade, and political reallocation. I also gave active support to the Dutch delegation to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Buenos Aires (COP10). The Netherlands was President of the Council of the European Union at the time and, as such, led the EU delegation at COP10. It gave me a look behind the scenes of international diplomacy and key sustainability negotiations.
