About Col D E Smith

Col Smith retired 23 December 2010 as Course Director for the Joint Flag Officer Warfighting Course. Col Smith graduated USAFA in 88. As SF Officer, Col Smith filled assignments throughout PACAF and CONUS, and deploying numerous times to Desert Storm, Calm, OIF, and OEF, most recently in 2008/2009 for 15 months as Dep Dir & J3 for the Civilian Police Assistance and Transition Team working directly for Theater PM, MG Cannon. Col Smith received the AF Combat Action Medal (AFCAM) for leading four firefights on the Tigris River, and Bronze Star, and Joint Service Achievement Medal.He worked outside the normal SF careerfield since 99 when he assumed duties as the Program Security Officer for HQ ACC Advanced Programs Division, responsible forthe operational security and beddown of all AF Special Access Programs (SAPs). Additionally, at the direction of COMACC, Col Smith was responsible for integrating the security for LO aircraft in Red Flag, then expanding the program to integrate numerousSAPs into the Operational level of warfighting through the creation of Coal Warfighter and OperationalWarfighter. In 2001, Col Smith became the first Security Forces Officer to work in Checkmate on the AirStaff where he was the Senior Program Security Officer in the Air Force reporting to the AF/XO and Chief of Staff responsible for all fielded SAPs. Oversee development and propagation of world-class information assurance technologies, secure communications and networking solutions, and secure mission and data systems to help achieve mission success.Designs, develops, and integrates highly sophisticated command, control, and communications systems for the U.S. military, federal agencies, other government agencies and related international customers. These state-of-the-art systems combine advanced imagery software and multi-sensor integration to provide real- time situational awareness to tactical decision makers.
