About Colas Droin
With a background in engineering and computational biophysics, my main interests include data analysis, statistical modelling, data visualization and web development. I have a strong publication record (Nature Physics, Nature Metabolism) from my academic years, and my PhD thesis was rewarded with the 8% Doctoral Program Thesis Distinction from EPFL.My expertise encompasses:- Data wrangling: I worked with many data formats, including high-dimensional datasets. I am familiar with cleaning and preprocessing data, including dimensionality reduction.- Data engineering: I am trained with SQL, databases, ETL, Data Warehousing and Data Lakes, Apache Spark.- Statistical learning from data : I have worked with a broad spectrum of machine learning methods, including deep learning and Bayesian inference. I am proficient with statistical tests and hypothesis testing.- Data visualization: I have good knowledge of design principles, with a taste for meaningful, aesthetic visualization. I have a good knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, to which I owe two 1st prize poster awards during my PhD. I have worked with most Python plotting libraries, including Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotly and Bokeh.- Software engineering: I am an experienced Python developer (8y+). Initially trained as an engineer in bioinformatics, I extended my skills over the years to encapsulate a broad range of software engineering practices (versioning with git, unit testing, containerization with Docker, CI/CD with Github Actions, etc.). - Web development: I have a strong interest in web development and the visualization perspectives it offers, such as interactive storytelling. I made several web-apps with Python Dash, HMTL, CSS and JS. I also made my portfolio with React and an online version of my CV with HTML/CSS. Computational Physicist (Senior Fellow)
I am developing Python packages helping with the conception, parametrization and submission of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) simulations.I am developing a web-based dashboard for the monitoring and visualization of collider observables, now used by the group to assess a collider's viability before simulations.I am doing multi-parametric optimization of High-Luminosity LHC models to improve the performance and viability of the collider.
Data Science And Data Visualization Specialist
I developed a set of machine learning and visualization tools in the form of a Python Dash web application to turn a large microscopy dataset into a 4D atlas of rodent lipid brain composition. The app is now used by researchers to easily explore the dataset and generate hypotheses.

Scientist Specialized In Data-Driven Computational Biology
As part of my PhD and post-doc, I worked on multiple computational biophysics projects having for theme "Single-cell analysis of noisy biological oscillators and their interactions".- I conceived and optimized a Hidden Markov Model on a microscopy dataset to better understand the non-linear dynamics of the cell-cycle and the circadian clock.- I studied a dataset of spatiotemporal liver mRNA expression using mixed-effect models representing the Fourier harmonics of the system.- I optimized an RNA velocity inference method based on differential geometry to quantify cell-cycle evolution from experimental scRNA-seq data.This led to two Nature-family journals publications (see below). All projects are open-source and implemented mainly in Python.
