The hydrology program has both a field and lab component. The lab component includes filtering water samples from creeks and rivers, running absorbance scans on water using a spectrophotometer, soil/residue extractions and performing biologically dissolved oxygen content analysis on samples. The lab student will also be expected to lift and organizing heavy (30lbs) sample tubs in a freezer, fill, label, and organizing sample bottles, wash bottles, and weigh and measure out water, residue and soil samples for extractions. The field portion of the program includes collecting daily and weekly samples from creeks and rivers, as well as measuring pH/EC/discharge and other parameters in these water bodies using field meters. This job also includes biweekly maintenance on weirs located in farmers’ fields. This entails walking into a field and then mowing and weed whipping the weirs. Finally as part of the job there will be time spent organizing and labeling samples in the lab and freezer, as well as at least one day a week spent grinding soil and processing residue samples (cleaning, weighing and chopping).
