About Cole Haxton

Hello! My name is Cole Haxton and welcome to my LinkedIn page, thank you for visiting it. I am design engineer with a passion for CAD work. I have experience in multiple fields including aerospace, industrial chemicals, consumer goods and research experimentation. Currently I am employed by Aerojet Rocketdyne as a design engineer at their Redmond, WA plant. My primary assignment is the generation, manipulation and management of 3D models and 2D engineering drawings for manufacturing of monopropellant and bipropellant rocket engines for use on in-space applications - in other words I design/draft thrusters for satellites, spacecraft and planetary landers. This work demands a high attention to detail to meet strict industry standards and ensure that our customers requirements are met. The hardware that we design and produce is often mission critical so it is imperative that we consistently deliver reliable hardware. My tasks demand daily collaboration with engineers from a multitude of disciplines including manufacturing, materials, analysis, quality and processes. The most valuable tool that I’ve gained during my time thus far with Aerojet Rocketdyne is the confidence to ask questions when necessary. I am not afraid to admit when I do not know an answer and lean heavily on the expertise of the skilled group of engineers that I get to work with each day.In addition to my assortment of technical engineering skills I have a strong suite of personal skills. I am very effective in my communication and enjoy any opportunity for public speaking. I believe that the relationships we build in the work environment are critical to the success not only of myself but also of the team around me. I use my interpersonal skills to create working relationships with my colleagues and I am very welcoming to new employees. I have been placed in charge of helping to onboard new hires and manage summer interns.

Undegraduate Researcher In Heat Transfer And Combustion Laboratories

Corvallis, Oregon Area

Lead undergraduate engineer on thermal analysis project sponsored by Facebook. The research consists of taking apart the Oculus Rift Virtual Reality Headset in order to determine the methods of heat dissipation for the device's micro-controller chip. The goal of the analysis is to determine a better method for removing heat from the system in order to prevent the forehead of the user from becoming uncomfortably hot during extended periods of use. The experiment is currently in its initial design and test phases. Additionally, I plan to write a paper on the overall findings and present it at a micro-technology conference in early spring. I am also assisting a graduate student in the Oregon State University Combustion, Ignition, Radiation, and Energy lab on a project to study ember generation for several different species of evergreen trees. This research is being done for the US Forestry services in an attempt to better understand the spread of forest fires from large embers.

Engineering Intern - Design & Cad Services

Supporting the design team with work on complex CAD models of monopropellant and bipropellant liquid rocket engines ranging in size from 3 inches in length to 3 feet in length. Work done with the smaller engines was in supporting the design of a Modular Propulsion System for use on CubeSats and SmallSats. The larger systems worked on were hypergolic bipropellant engines for use on the Orion manned spaceflight mission. Also supported a substantial amount of customer requirement verification for these engines, reviewing over 2,000 engineering specifications to ensure compliance.

Created CAD models of custom projects for customers as well as for projects to be used within the company (such as a laser sensor to count parts coming off a metal press). Worked on the shop floor with mills, lathes, CNC, wire EDM, grinders, and a sand blaster. Heat treated a multitude of parts and performed maintenance on a furnace. Reverse engineered a box erecting machine in order to create one for use with boxes of different sizes. Worked with people from all sectors within the company including maintenance, packaging, stamping, shipping and management. Inspected parts and verified precise measurements under tight tolerances. Worked closely with my supervisor, one of the few managers within the company, and learned many lessons about leading a team of people that come from a variety of backgrounds.

Measurement And Verification Specialist (Internship)

This job consisted of measurement and verification of utility usage data. Ameresco is an energy services contracting company; they replace energy systems in buildings and guarantee an amount of savings based on the efficiency of the new systems and if these savings are not met the company pays the client the difference. My job was to collect and analyze the utility data from before the project versus after the project was completed. I had to communicate on a daily basis both with customers, utility companies, and workers within other branches of Ameresco. I worked with a multitude of complex Excel files; organization of all of the files and folders for each of the hundreds of projects was essential. I worked closely with a team of measurement and verification specialists across the different branches of the companies northwest region. My work was scrutinized thoroughly as the analyses I completed were used directly in final project reports given to the customers. This internship taught me many valuable lessons about dealing with customers, project management, expertise of the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, Project, and Outlook), and communicating with members of an engineering team from initial project design to closure.
