During the summers, I ran a detasseling crew for S&J Detasseling in Grand Island, Nebraska. Detasseling is a very rigorous manual labor that involves walking long distances through corn fields starting at 6:00 AM in the hottest month of the summer, pulling tassels off of corn plants, so the corn may cross pollinate. I started at S&J at the age of 12 as a puller, and for over 19 summers worked my way to be a supervisor over a crew of over 200 workers. Responsibilities included: allocating manpower, coordinating travel, hiring/firing, meeting safety specifications, filling out necessary time sheets for payroll, as well as facilitating and coordinating in field activities.
