Audio Engineer
Engineer Intern
I worked as an intern at a localisation studio in Glasgow three days a week for a month. Here I learned the art of localisation; recording artists who speak different languages and placing subtitles in foreign languages in the correct places within a video, as well as mixing and mastering the final videos and audio for the clients. The job also entailed some video editing. This job made me jump out of my comfort zone and also dust off my language skills to be able to complete the tasks.
Trainee Sound Engineer
I worked in this music venue two years; although primarily I was the restaurant manager I was given the responsibility of conducting simple lighting shows for weddings and corporate events, as well as setting up small bands and microphones. I also ensured that all of the equipment was stored away correctly and rearranged the speaker set up for a different kind of staging. Some of the artists I engineered for include, DJ Yella, Twin Atlantic and Beth Gibbons.
Sound Assistant
This was an eight-week shoot, one of the weeks I was out on location so I was in charge of packing up the equipment and correctly labelling it all. My duties here involved charging batteries and providing in-ear monitors for the director and other members of the crew. I also had to ensure the time code for the sound and the cameras were completed at the start of the day as well as send the tone to the cameras in order to set the correct levels. I was in charge of playback for the entire shoot, which was used more than twice a day due to the type of program we were filming. On occasion I was brought on as the second boom operator, mainly booming off-line dialogue but on more than one occasion I was booming on-camera dialogue as the cameras were cross shooting. I was also given the responsibility to record wild tracks and some Foley art, and then cut and edit them together, which were then used in the final edit.
Sound Trainee
Between December 2017 and March 2018 I took place in a placement with BBC Scotland. It was here that I learnt a multitude of skills, not limited to sound engineering, I was taught about camera work, producing, directing and much more. I took part in live broadcasts of the news, Reporting Scotland, I went and worked offsite at football stadiums and I took part in radio broadcasts. I also sat in and helped with the final mix of shows such as The One Show, choosing and editing Foley and sound effects to be placed in the show. Working here taught me how to work as part of a team in a large organisation and how much hard work it takes to run a successful television and radio company. I proved by working here that I am not shy of early mornings or long days, as a lot of my days started at 4 am so I was in and ready for the breakfast shows.
Sound Assistant
In July 2017 I was fortunate enough to gain work experience on set filming with Netflix, I worked two days as a sound apprentice and one day as an assistant director. My duties as the junior engineer included retrieving mats and laying them down to prevent sound interference, mic'ing up the actors and holding the boom mic. This was a fantastic experience that gave me the knowledge that cannot be taught in a classroom on how a film set is run and the behaviour that is expected of you.
Live Sound Engineer
This is a venue that has won many awards for its live music facilities. I worked two floors in the establishment; on one floor I worked with an analogue desk and the other floor a digital desk. I would regularly have to work both floors on the same night, meaning that multi-tasking was key. My tasks here included; set-ups for gigs, sound checking bands, as well as weekly services on the equipment.
