I am a physicist working on automating software engineering tasks with machine learning. I use large scale selections of GitHub and internal Microsoft repositories, commits, issues, and pull requests to train natural language processing models to understand source code. Our team builds products from these models solving problems like automatic completion, code search, code review, bug detection/patching, and we incorporate them into VSCode, Visual Studio, and AzureDevOps.In my Physics PhD I studied statistical physics, machine learning, algorithms, and optimization. Using Bayesian inference and modeling I solved problems in image reconstruction like image alignment and deconvolution. Inspired by machine learning algorithms I studied spin glasses---a canonical model of complexity---by learning lower-dimensional descriptions which are more understandable. I also applied dynamical systems theories to the Renormalization Group (the theory describing the universality of phase transitions).

I led the evaluation of GitHub Copilot models for Copilot Chat, including ChatGPT and GPT-4. I fine-tuned opensource models for applications in focused software engineering tasks. In addition to publishing research in leading ML conferences, I contributed models and ideas to over a dozen patents and product areas as diverse as Azure CLI, Intellicode in VS/VSCode, MakeCode, and more.
