I’m an engineering manager specializing in highly available web services. I’ve run a number of full stack product teams that have owned everything from the service infrastructure up through the web front end. I believe that successfully running an engineering team relies on two things:Eng, Product, and Design teams should be close partners - Never once have I seen a good situation come from throwing work over the fence. Product specs inform technical design. Technical capabilities (and limitations) unlock design thinking. At all points of a project, those three teams should be in close communication to ensure the delivery of a truly great product that is fast, reliable, and meets the needs of the user.Grow your engineers - Every engineer from the intern to the principal has things to learn, and ways of becoming a better developer. As a people manager, I think helping my engineers navigate their career growth and promo path is my most important role.
