Multi-Spectral Camouflage and Concealment - Performing trade studies on state-of-the-art thermal signature detection software and imagers to identify strengths and weaknesses to aid advancements in material selections that will enable US soldiers to defeat enemy thermal detection systems through multi-spectral concealment, deception, and decoy capabilities.- Developing methodologies to characterize thermal signature management materials through the use of thermography and other techniques allowing for successful integration into the soldiers’ equipment and uniform to remain undetected from enemy thermal signature detection software and imagers in a rapidly changing battlefield.Color Changing Materials (Activity Beyond Primary Responsibility)- Investigating the potential for developing rapidly tunable color-changing materials in a multi-layered device to enable visual camouflage for a soldiers’ uniform and equipment.- Developing a MATLAB script for colorimetry analysis using colored images and spectroscopic data in the visual wavelength band of the EMS allowing user to quantify subtle and visually noticeable changes in colors.Dynamic Exoskeleton for Controlled Emergency Landings (DECEL) - Identified challenges and limitations that soldiers face when performing physically strenuous tasks and explored technological opportunities and constraints of existing exoskeletons to aid the soldier in tasks such as high-impact landings. - Designed custom composite materials with passive energy absorbing properties, while simultaneously modeling a lower limb exoskeleton for integration with the composite materials. Conducted a failure analysis simulation, 3D printed a prototype, and then machined the final prototype Composite Hinge Structures with Variable In-Plane Stiffness- Designed, fabricated, and tested lightweight, flexible composite structures that passively provide complex kinematic behavior towards integration into mobile robotics and exoskeleton applications

In-situ microviscometry for precise cure monitoring● Designed and fabricated a sensor signal processing circuit and wrote an intensive LabVIEW program to interact with the signal processing circuit for automated real-time data collection● Integrated the sensor system into polymer resins to track cure kinetics● Built a viscoelastic model in ANSYS which correlated with the experimental results, thus allowing optimization of the process

Investigation of Structure-Property Relationship in Organic Matrix Nanocomposite for High Temperature Applications● Optimized multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNTs) reinforcement into a high temperature polyimide (HTPI) matrix ● Successfully modified the surface of MWCNTs via a non-ionic surfactant to improve the dispersion quality of the nanoparticle inclusions ● Successfully reinforced the HTPI with a hybrid inclusion of surface modified MWCNTs and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs)● Optimized the thermal cure process of the neat and nano-reinforced HTPI system● Significantly improved the thermal and mechanical properties
