About Colin Wright

After starting out as a designer in the family kitchen business, I decided to study at the Humberside School of Architecture as a 24 year old ‘mature student’ to see where it would lead. I wasn’t a brilliant student. I loved the lifestyle but I was too impatient and wanted to work. After all, I was in my mid-20’s, time was running out! I ended up back as a kitchen designer.During my next spell in the kitchen industry I worked for some of the most prestigious kitchen brands in the world in a variety of positions. I spent some time in Germany with Poggenpohl and was their UK designer for showrooms and high-profile clients, including David & Victoria Beckham and Jamie Oliver. In fact it was Jamie who encouraged me to start my own design consultancy and provided more design work for his homes, studio and campervan, and introductions to a wider network of high profile clientele. It was a whirlwind 5 years. Not long after the closure of my business, and a subsequent role affected by the GFC, I emigrated to Australia for ‘a couple of years’. After a brief spell in the kitchen industry here, I discovered a new passion. Architectural products.Working for Artedomus was amazing. Their products are beautiful, and the designers that we worked with were creating some of the best projects in Australia. This role had given me an insight into the architectural world that perhaps I could have found myself in if I had the patience and dedication to have been a student over 20 years ago, when time was running out. Artedomus was also an incredible place to work, with great people and a fantastic culture. I loved working there, but in 2020 I found a new love. Handles. When launching Spiggy it was always my intention to create the ‘Artedomus of the hardware world’. This is reflected in the products that we represent, the design of our showrooms, the service we offer, and the projects that we work on. In 2023 Spiggy merged with Artedomus and we are now, literally, the Artedomus of the hardware world. If you would like to learn more about our products, how we work and how we may be able to work together, please feel free to email me at any time - colin@spiggy.com.au

  • Colin Wright Ltd
    Designer/ Director
Colin Wright Ltd Apr 2010 - Aug 2011
Relocating to New Zealand I spent the first few months extensively networking and visiting design professionals to gain a thorough understanding of the unique NZ market before starting my own design consultancy. I soon secured work as a freelance business consultant for one of NZ’s largest kitchen retail networks and was also invited to speak at a number of design industry events. Fellow design professionals were quick to recognise my high levels of experience and amongst the projects that I was commissioned to work on included a classical scheme for the kitchen and adjoining rooms in a stunning period property on the hills outside Wellington designed by the highly respected architect Greg Noble. Further high profile clients maintained my standing as a specialist, with my work featured in several key publications to further promote my business in both Australia and New Zealand.

Manufacturers of ‘the finest furniture of its kind in the world’ (as quoted by Robb Report) it was a true privilege to work for the highly respected and uniquely talented Mark Wilkinson, somebody that I had admired since being first introduced into the industry by my father.Working from what was their very first showroom but which now formed part of a global network of luxury showrooms, I was creating bespoke design solutions for the most discerning of clientele. In my first year I was the highest performing designer in my showroom and in my second year, I achieved 100% of my target by the end of August.
  • Colin Wright Design Consultants
    Designer
    Colin Wright Design Consultants 2001 - 2005
Personal circumstances led to me starting my first business, a freelance design consultancy for the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom industry. My first client, and my mentor, was Jamie Oliver with whom I had formed a close friendship with during our project with Poggenpohl. Jamie was instrumental in giving me the confidence to start up on my own, providing regular streams of work and referrals. Projects included his tv/photography studio, his VW campervan, the kitchen and bathroom for his second home, and even part of his global theatre roadshow. Referral work included introductions to the beautiful Cat Deeley and the radio/tv/entrepreneur Chris Evans.Based in the Midlands but with projects all over the UK, and a project in Moscow, I developed a portfolio of uniquely designed projects and a reputation for inspirational kitchen design. This was recognised with my designs reaching the finals of Kitchen Designer of the Year on two occasions.
  • Poggenpohl
    Designer/ Area Manager
    Poggenpohl 1998 - 2001
    Herford, De
Primarily my role was to focus on the more creative design projects for the group, designing concepts for high-end luxury dwellings and multi-plot property developments such as Harrods Village, Barnes, and The Sky Penthouses, Kensington, the latter of which had one of the first Aluminium kitchens in the UK installed in the main penthouse, described as one of the finest penthouses in London. High quality presentations were essential, often made at board level and occasionally included visits with clients to the Head Office and factory in Germany. This eventually led to me providing a very personal design service for Poggenpohl’s high profile private clients, including projects for David & Victoria Beckham and Jamie Oliver. After spending some time at Poggenpohls legendary design department in Germany under the guide of Herr Junker and his team, my return to the UK saw me given the added responsibility of designing displays and showrooms for our UK network of retailers, one of which attained the prize for ‘UK’s best showroom’.My relationship with the UK network of Poggenpohl retailers later developed into me being given the role of Area Manager for approximately 90 accounts covering most of England & Wales, excluding London and the North East. My role was to provide support on client issues, product training and allocations of targets, whilst also ensuring that the globally recognised Poggenpohl brand was presented suitably to meet the expectations of our highly discerning clientele. My design responsibilities were scaled down to facilitate this, although I continued to work for the high profile clients and to produce showroom concepts.
  • Scottwood Of Nottingham
    Designer
    Scottwood Of Nottingham 1997 - 1998
With such a strong background in the kitchen industry gained through the family business, it was almost ironic that my first position after University would be kitchen related. My role was primarily to sell hand-made kitchens to discerning private purchasers. However, my strong project management skills were to result in my also being responsible for the sales and management of a contract that the company had obtained to supply kitchens for a development in Barbados, further honing my strong organisational skills and design-flair.I was soon promoted within the company to work from the Head Office. My new role maintained the successful work that I had been producing for the project in Barbados with the added responsibility of selling, developing and designing new displays to our dealer network, including outlets in New York, Philadelphia & Honolulu. Due to the time differences (and pre-email!) long hours ensued when faxing, negotiating and closing the sales to overseas clients. Additionally, I would regularly be involved in exploring new door styles, predicting future trends and procuring new accessories to add to our product portfolio.
