In my role at Virent, I have lead research projects across our technology portfolio, including feedstock pretreatment, development and optimization of catalytic processes, catalyst regeneration, and product treatment/fractionation. An important focus of this work is increasing the commercial relevance of these processes.

My role as an Assistant Scientist in the Stahl lab involves leading optimization of an oxidative "lignin-first" biomass fractionation process involving heterogeneous catalysts. My responsibilities include managing the overall project direction, writing grant applications, mentoring graduate students, and surveying relevant catalyst systems applied to biomass-derived compounds

As a postdoctoral researcher in the Stahl lab, I was a key team member in the development of a novel fuel cell technology based on work performed during my Ph.D. I managed the IP strategy for this technology for both fuel cell and energy storage applications, resulting in three patent applications. In addition, I performed market research and initiated business plan development into fuel cell and energy storage fields, including contacting and interviewing prospective partners and customers. These efforts included engaged in entrepreneurial opportunities through on-campus programs, including Discovery to Product (2016-2018) and the Wisconsin Entrepreneurial Bootcamp (2017) as well as leading grant application efforts for this project.

I was a graduate student in the lab of Prof. Shannon Stahl, working on projects related to studying the electrocatalytic O2 reduction using a cobalt catalyst and quinone mediators. These studies included a collaboration investigating the mechanism of aerobic hydroquinone oxidation catalyzed by a cobalt complex using experimental and computational techniques, a collaboration probing the relationship between quinone substituents and their redox potentials using experimental and computational methods, and a project illustrating the beneficial effects of hydroquinone mediators on Co-catalyzed electrocatalytic oxygen reduction.Primary projects:Using kinetic and spectroscopic techniques paired with computations to investigate the cobalt-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of 1,4-hyroquinone.Studying the beneficial effects of redox mediators in the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction.Measuring the 1 e– and 2 e–/2 H+ redox potentials of a variety of quinones and relating these redox potentials to their substitution pattern.SKILLS:-Electrochemisty techniques (cyclic voltammetry; bulk electrolysis)-Spectroscopic techniques (React-IR; UV-Visible; multinuclear 1-D, selective 1-D and 2-D NMR; EPR)-Kinetic measurements (using custom-built gas uptake apparatus)-Inert atmosphere work (Schlenk technique and glovebox)

In the lab of Prof. Dasan Thamattoor, I synthesized a series of 1-methyl-8-(aryl)napthalene derivatives to study the the influence of substituents on the aromatic ring current of benzene rings. This effect was studied using NMR and computational techniques. This research culminated in an Honors Thesis.
