During the two years that I spent in ADI’s Aerospace and Defense business unit, I had the opportunity to work with a group of great people and had a wonderful learning opportunity, particularly from a technology standpoint. Previously, I had never worked with and lead teams focused on RF products. I enjoyed the challenge of coming up the RF learning curve from customers to products and everything in-between. One of ADI’s strengths is complete signal chains and that was certainly the case here. The products ranged from broad band amplifiers to clocking to Giga-sample-per-second high speed converters to complete RF modules. Some of the accomplishments that I’m proud of include: setting up a revenue forecasting methodology that greatly improved the accuracy of quarterly and annual forecasts, prioritized the development of a new RF direct sample reference design which had strategic importance from a technology stand point and lead to very large and new customer opportunities, developed/led the annual strategic planning process for the BU, and advocated for a new carbon nanotube technology development.

This was my first time leading a software engineering team. About half of my 80-person team were software engineers. There was great team collaboration across four world-wide sites and the opportunity was fantastic to dive deep into software ranging from embedded Linux to software development tools such as C compliers. Cyber security was an area that I particularly enjoyed working on when in this role. I helped with the integration of a newly acquired cyber security company and developed the automotive cyber security strategy. This included engagements with strategic automotive OEMs and tier 1 companies, building of automotive specific cyber security system knowledge, and recommendations on investments in cyber security for the automotive group. While in this role I also made significant contributions to helping this group pivot and diversity the product portfolio to a new technology area that drove significant growth.

Led a worldwide organization of 40 applications/software engineering and marketing personnel.I was a member of the acquisition team that lead technical investigation and due diligence of cyber security companies. Results were positive including a successful acquisition that brought cyber security technology and competency being used throughout ADI. Through three separate complex legal negotiations, all of which had successful outcomes, I developed a proficiency with legal contracts. The diversity of the agreements provided a broad perspective. One was an ADI corporate supplier agreement to a very large customer. The second an agreement for multi-year IP licensing agreement with a supplier to ADI. The third was a royalty agreement with partner company. One of my favorite and most enjoyable accomplishments at ADI was leading the team that submitted ADI’s nomination for the IEEE Corporate Innovation award. I was extremely fortunate to work with ADI’s Chairman of the Board and Co-founder and a team of senior technologists to nominate ADI for 50 years of technology leadership and innovation in converters. The result: ADI won the award.

Led an organization of 20 marketing engineers including the processor business development team in China. I enjoyed very much working closely with the China-team, including making frequent trips, with the goals of developing the partner network for ADI and growing business there. For the first time I became a regular and significant contributor to annual strategic planning, which was something that I would continue to do for the subsequent 10 years at ADI. Strategic presentations were made to the board of directors and all levels of senior management. We could tell the presentations were a success by the approval of our R&D budgets each year. I was part of the leadership team that, over the course of four years, transformed this business from being marginally profitable to model profitability.
