A strong knowledge and understanding of the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) and British Columbia Building Code (BCBC) was required to complete the structural design of various building types. Effective communication with construction management and project consultant teams was essential to provide structural engineering assistance during the design and construction phases. High-level seismic assessments of existing structures were performed, and seismic retrofit schemes were developed to bring these building up to current building code requirements. Finally, this position helped develop strong interpersonal and organizational skills required to efficiently provide structural engineering judgement and designs.

This academic research position provided an opportunity to specialize in the seismic design of advanced timber structures. This research focused on the adaptation of high r-factor structural bracing systems into hybrid timber-steel buildings with a goal of developing and testing innovative hybrid connections that utilized modern timber fasteners. Additional research investigating the nonlinear dynamic analysis of these adapted systems was preformed to evaluate their effect on the seismic performance of a six-storey heavy timber structure. This position furthered the development of time management and efficiency skills by meeting workload demands and stringent deadlines. Finally, the position helped to strengthen leadership skills and teamwork through the supervision of two undergraduate research assistants.

This position involved holding weekly problem analysis sessions and office hours aimed at strengthening the students understanding of the course material through applications. In addition to the assign duties, extra tutorial sessions were held throughout the midterm and final exam periods to provide students with a review and more advanced application of course material. This position also provided an opportunity for growth of leadership, presentation, and teaching skills.

This position involved coordinating multinational subcontractors to ensure project deadlines were met. A spreadsheet was developed to efficiently track construction documents as they passed through the various stages of approval. As part of the construction management team, interpersonal skills were developed that enabled for efficient project scheduling and teamwork. This project required proficiency in the ability to reading and relaying detailed engineering drawings and site instructions. The rural Alberta site provided a challenging working environment with long hours, which required continuous attention to detail.
