I helped set up DataJavelin initially as a unit within the University developing the business plan and initial strategy. I then took the lead the commercial and sales lead for the company.As experts in interpretable machine learning, including Bayesian methods we provided consulting services to companies. We worked with companies from many sectors including agriculture, digital marketing, environmental, health, remote sensing, retail and sports.

Calypsort is a cloud service which enables machine learning non-experts to leverage powerful algorithms with distributed system and streaming technologies (Apache Spark, Kafka, Mesos, Deeplearning4J) for classification or predictive analytics. The software is specifically designed for fast streaming and batch dataset problems, i.e. where there is a continuous flow of data and there is a necessity to continuously update the model which describes the underlying data structure.Calypsort is built on expertise from the team that designed and runs the data acquisition system for the Large Hadron Collider which handles enormous data acquisition rates.

Our product GoScale was an IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) product using an new hypervisor we developed, enabling automatic scaling of virtual machines (in milliseconds). Unfortunately we were unable to secure enough IP addresses to meet demand. Consequently we built a service to monitor other IaaS services but failed to get this much off the runway. We were a Y Combinator startup in summer 2012.

StackBlaze was a innovative new way of hosting PHP web applications. Hosted on an independent data centre we built both the IaaS level in order to provide this PaaS (Platform as a Service) to customers. We launched in a private beta in October 2011 and public beta in February 2012. Growth was rapid and resulted in our successful application to join Y Combinator.

Tripbod connected travellers, online, to trusted local people in their destination who can help plan their trip with local knowledge and expertise and is now a key part of TripAdvisor. I stayed involved through a second investment round and successful acquisition by TripAdvisor (NASDAQ: TRIP).

My role at the University of Brighton was in the commercialisation of IP in all schools, but particularly in science and engineering.I provided business mentoring to several local start-up companies and entrepreneurial academics and students. I helped entrepreneurs and academics seek investment funds, as well as sitting on regional investment panels and running an internal fund at the University.I ran commercialisation project across three universities (Brighton, Surrey and Kent) and was part of the top team for a 11 university project CommercialiSE.I founded and ran a executive search service, the Executives Register for universities in the South East and the SEEDA Enterprise Hub Network. The Executives Register connected with CXOs and NEDs interested in being involved hands-on in spin-outs and early stage growth companies.

Part-time PhD with Century Dynamics. Conducted R&D into meshfree particle dynamics and developed the first commercial SPH software which was implemented in AUTODYN. Also developed new mathematical methods and algorithms for high order efficient meshfree methods. Presented in papers and at several conferences but without the secret sauce. The work was so successful that I decided not to publish the work as a PhD thesis as the a key advantage of Century Dynamics would have been lost; so no PhD.

MD at Century Dynamics Limited which was acquired by ANSYS Inc.Century Dynamics technologies are used in ANSYS Explicit products and other software sold to the Oil and Gas sector.I decided to leave soon after completion of the sale to ANSYS, seeing this as an opportunity to pursue new challenges. All of my senior colleagues stayed on so the company was in good hands.

Century Dynamics developed, supported and sold computational engineering and physics (HPC) software worldwide to several industries in 40 countries. Our products were AUTODYN, AutoReaGas, ASAS and AQWA.As MD, I was responsible for the global expansion of the company. Based in the UK office directing all staff and in the offices I opened in NL, Houston and Hong Kong. Also lead on the acquisition and integration of another engineering software business.My role involved stabilising the finances (after taking over as MD), launching new products, diversifying into new sectors, developing partnerships, acquiring another business and taking a leading role in preparing the company for sale.I led continued to take the lead in R&D projects (internally and with national and international partners) and for academic partnerships.In 2005 with a growing and healthy business the company was sold to ANSYS (NASDAQ: ANSS).

Co-founder of this company and took the lead role in the development of software products, associated consultancy and R&D work. Lots of software development in Fortran and some C/C++.Responsible for product management and development of AUTODYN which become a leading explicit product for fluid-structure interaction and shock physics. Techniques developed included FE (Finite Element), CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and SPH (Smoothed Particle Dynamics).During my time as a developer I came up with a number of innovative algorithms in material modelling, interpolation, search, visualisation and space-time integration. Published papers, spoke and exhibited at international conferences. Drove adoption of the product sales through building a strong user community of academic and industry researchers.I was also the creator and product manager of the AutoReaGas software product used for gas explosion analysis. Responsible for growing the consulting, development and support teams.

Started and grew a new company division for Computational Physics and later expanded into other products in high performance computing.Initially specialist consulting on major capital projects (buildings, bridges, marine structures, power stations) including seismic, stress, noise and vibration analysis using computational modelling.Using and writing engineering software in Fortran on DEC PDP & VAX systems and then 1st Generations IBM-PCs.

Responsible for new product designs in power switchgear. I loved designing products but early failures (literally) led me into product failure analysis (this time other people's designs!). That got me interested in product development and analysis where we scored some great successes through combined physical testing and simulation projects. This led to taking full responsibility for using and developing mechanical CAE software.
