The role is designed to ensure that all Rio Tinto Australian operations (mines, terminals, airports, refineries and smelters) have safe supply of diesel, oils, lubricants, jet fuel, petrol, explosives and all associated services. With up to 100 daily bulk deliveries to 300 delivery points to remote locations and the provision of 'on-site' contractor services for two large terminals and mine blasting. The role is high profile given the large spend and risk to Rio Tinto operations. With team members based in Perth and Brisbane the geography is large with extreme conditions. With a combined expenditure of over $1.5 Billion there is constant focus on productivity, cost savings and revenues enhancement.

Designed, developed and deployed a global project management office (G-PMO) that supported Rio Tinto’s aggressive $5 Billion cost reduction programme set out in 2012. Leading a small team of specialist (accountants and business analysts) as well as managing a diverse range of stakeholders expectations, the PMO tracked savings, monitored a large pipeline of global ideas as well as facilitated idea generation sessions. The role was ‘informally’ influential as it crossed many business units and corporate functions. Output from the programme was used in both internal and external reporting with updates to various investor bulletins.

Responsibilities were to develop and manage global raw materials categories valued at $500M. The role requires the co-ordination of 13 procurement professionals located in China, India, Canada, France and Australia with 4 manager level employees based in Singapore. The role was both commercially and operationally focused, interfacing frequently with Rio Tinto Alcan senior leadership teams and the broader CFO community.

Accountable to develop and deploy product and sourcing strategies for a defined grouping of high value strategic category items. The role had 11 direct professional reports based in China, Canada, Europe and Australia. The key challenge was to integrate teams following a large $36 Billion acquisition of a competitor.

Developed and led a project management office to deliver, in excess of US$100 million, synergy savings for raw materials following the acquisition of a major competitor. Presented commercial projects to the Head of Purchasing for presenting to Rio Tinto Executive Committee. Led and managed 4 external consultants to manage 15 separate global teams under a very compressed timetable.

Accountable for all Rio Tinto Aluminium (Australia and New Zealand) metal trading service and back off sales systems. Leading and managing 8 direct reports, the role was designed to support all sales functions such as credit control, invoicing, international finance (letter of credit), hedging, daily forecasting, sales reports (Weekly, monthly and quarterly) and shipping. With exposure to SAP and other systems the role was a great insight into managing complex administrative processes.

With 7 direct reports and a total section headcount of 55 employees, the role was influential within the community given the smelter's size and scale relative to other businesses in the area.
