From 2010 to 2011, Colin spent a year in The Netherlands trying to learn how to pronounce the name of the school he was attending for typeface design (“Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten”). While there he perfected his Python programming, created Civilian (a typeface for the web, a new concept in 2011), and received a MA in typeface design from the Type & Media postgraduate program. Accustomed to schools with long names from his undergrad years (he holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art), his love of type was nurtured by an outstanding group of typography teachers and the rich typographic history of Baltimore itself.After graduating from Type & Media in 2011, Colin traveled to New York City to work for Hoefler & Co, makers of typefaces such as Gotham, Knockout, and Whitney. For 10 years, he learned from a team of very talented designers and worked on a variety of projects, including Decimal, which was featured in the Netflix documentary series, Abstract. While at H&Co, Colin developed a knack for making and manipulating font data, known as font engineering. When Monotype (makers of Helvetica, Times New Roman, and basically every other font on your computer) acquired H&Co. in 2021, Colin joined Monotype's expert team of font engineers. Over the course of his career in type design, Colin has lectured and taught workshops at the Atelier National de Recherche Typographique, the Cooper Union, MICA, and the Letterform Archive. For the past few years he has also taught a course in font production for the Type@Cooper Extended Program.Now, Colin is so stoked to be taking on the role of Senior Type Director & Font Engineer at OH no Type Co.
