Work in a modern organisation is, for most people, crap. Somewhere between ‘meh!’ and miserable. At best, it’s a waste of your talents and at worst, it is actually damaging you. There’s a reason my logo says ‘Decrapify Work or Die’. I have a mission to make the workplace better, to ‘Decrapify Work’and make it human again. I don’t want people to have a bad experience like I, and many others I’ve met since, had. I want work to be a positive in people’s lives, not a vortex that consumes their hopes, dreams, energies and health.Right now, I look to help people in three situations.Changemakers - those people who can see there is a better way and are committed to bringing it about or perishing in the process. These are the people who are at the bottom end of the organisation, probably leading teams and actually getting the work done but are getting utterly fed up with the way work is done and the culture around them.The squeezed middle managers - who are struggling to cope, finding it hard to reconcile their commitment to their teams and the organisations demands and feeling like it is taking a big toll on them, their personal life and their health.And those who can see they are on the path to leaving corporate life, or have found themselves (usually unceremoniously) ejected, and need to adjust, adapt and re-invent themselves.I have been in all of these positions. I know what it feels like and I have some ideas, insights and experience of what needs to be done to navigate a way out of the tension and dysfunction you find yourself in, to get out of the storm and into calmer waters.It’s my belief that we can change the world of work person by person. We can each use our agency and our power, which we both have more of than we realise, to change OUR world. Then we can affect those around us in our circle of influence, and so create ripples that will spread out across the organisation and the world of work.
