About Colin Stokes

I use communications strategies to make social change—in organizations, in media, and in our own families. Elevating the voices of diverse people, and applying my own, I use the principles and tools of storytelling to fight inequity and build a more just society.I am available for freelance and contract writing, editing, design, and coaching projects.I am also a public speaker and blogger on popular culture, parenting, and being a straight white male. My TEDxBeaconStreet talks have been viewed more than 2.5 million times, including in high school and college classrooms around the world. I have spoken and facilitated dialogues in community centers, prep schools, and Walt Disney Animation Studios. I worked with LeanIn.org and Girl Scouts of America's "Ban Bossy" campaign to adapt the talk "How Movies Teach Manhood" into a family toolkit for starting discussions of gender bias in media with kids. My first career was as a stage actor, specializing in musicals and Shakespeare. My background is in graphic design, Star Wars trivia, and white privilege.

What is my responsibility as the parent of white children to tell them the truth?Alongside my own talks, I've recruited and coached numerous other speakers, who have been brilliant despite my advice. "I Love You, You'Re Perfect, Now Change" 2001 - 2005
Played multiple roles in the finally-closed off-Broadway production of this musical revue. Achieved the dream of going to work every day through a stage door. Learned that, contrary to common understanding, one does not escape monotony by succeeding as an actor; performing the same show every night for 18 months defines monotony. But I am proud to have worked with some delightful people at the Westside, Stuart Street and on tour.
