The Gate software was used as part of a client-server solution to enhance the user experience of value added services on mobile devices. Designed and implemented mechanism to provide ‘form-based’ functionality which allowed client-server interaction between mobile handsets and remote servers. This technology was integrated as part of several handsets including from Motorola, Philips and others.Responsible for design and delivery of how Magic4 messaging technologies would integrate with Nokia Smart Messaging. Involved working with Nokia in San Diego.

Part of the divisional management team responsibile for profitability of around thirty staff, resourcing, project planning and estimating, interviewing candidates employees and annual staff reviews.Leading team of up to ten engineers working on a messaging framework for the first commercial Symbian smartphone R380 PDA smartphone using EPOC32 (ER5u). Overseeing design, development and testing phases of a key component in a strategic market product. Involves liasing with senior Ericsson management and developers both in the UK and Sweden, producing and allocating work packages and daily communication with key development staff. Design and development of graphical front end components used in the Symbian EPOC SDK, for use in Ericsson’s reference design, and application programs for a range of Ericsson mobile phones/PDAs using Symbian’s Eikon and EPOC32 environments.

Part of the Hewlett Packard development team designing and maintaining their Adminflow data flow management software. Using C++ and CORBA technology on Unix-based platforms with interfaces to Oracle SQL databases and SMTP mail feeders.

Design and development for MPKITZ - multi-serial port power relays, using RS232 and RS485 (specifically IEC870) serial communications. These relays were based on the Motorola 68360 processor, using OSE 68K multitasking operating system and Diab C compiler and debugging tools. Responsibilities including software design, development, testing and debugging as well as ability to design use and understand Yourdon design tools for writing and modifying project specifications.

I set up and jointly owned IQuest to design and develop applications, initially for Greater Manchester Police, to interrogate and recover data on Sharp personal organisers. The main purpose was to overcome password protection mechanisms and recover data from corrupted memory cards, which could be used as police evidence to convict suspected criminals. The project also involved setting up my own sole trading company, documenting and marketing the product The original application has been partially re-written and expanded in Visual Basic and now supports Sharp, and some Casio and Psion series organisers.

Team leader over several junior programmers, which involved assigning liaising with project manager and customer, allocating work schedules, supervising coding and assuring code quality standards. Due to the nature of projects and small development team, this role still included a large amount of application development, using real-time applications running over a proprietary network. Developed infrared monitoring software for tracking customers’ movements around a well known high street chain of shops. Software was used to determine most strategic positioning of product ranges and to identify potential bottlenecks in the flow of customers around the shop floor. This software is still in daily use in over 100 branches. Project involved feasibility study of project, Jackson software design and coding as well as onsite implementation and customer liaison.

Development of software applications and diagnostic utilities to aid field service/site engineers together with general PC-based applications to enhance marketability of new, and existing, Sharp products including hand held organiser, scanner diagnostic tools, industrial photocopier remote configuration, PC Connectivity software and printer emulatorsDesign and development of a set of memory resident monitoring utilities for Sharp PC-3000 hand held PC to improve battery life of products. Improvements of up to 30% were achieved using combinations of heuristics and environmental considerations.
