About Colleen Broderick

Colleen’s journey is rooted in a profound belief: when individuals are given the space to reflect and engage in meaningful work, they can access a boundless reservoir of potential. Her path began in communications and publishing, but it was through her work with urban youth that she discovered the transformative power of reflection and purpose-driven action. This insight became a spark that has fueled over two decades of deep, purposeful work across diverse roles—teacher, integral coach, strategist, and system designer.Colleen sees leadership as a deeply human endeavor, one that arises from within and radiates outward to inspire and transform. Her approach is both holistic and courageous, touching individuals, teams, and systems at every level. She believes in the power of compassionate leadership, grounded in self-awareness and connection, to create lasting change. From rural villages to bustling cities, from classrooms to boardrooms, she has journeyed globally, helping leaders navigate complexity, hold uncertainty, and cultivate the wisdom needed to foster human flourishing. Her work transcends borders and sectors, leaving an enduring impact not only on organizations but on the hearts and minds of those she touches. Colleen invites leaders into a profound inquiry: how can we serve in a way that unlocks the potential in others and brings about the thriving of communities and systems? Through this inquiry, she guides others toward a leadership that is both resilient, and transformational—leadership that leaves the world better than we found it.Armed with expertise in the Compassionate Systems Framework out of MIT's Center for System Awareness and an integral coach certified in the Immunity to Change process and Leadership Circle Profile assessment, Colleen is a master at creating spaces for transformation and growth. She has a gift for uncovering hidden potential and crafting experiences that empower individuals and teams to unlock their biggest possibilities.

  • Arizona State University Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College
    Director Of Learning And Design
Arizona State University Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College Jan 2023 - Oct 2024
    Fort Collins, Colorado, United States
The Next Education Workforce team commits to providing ALL students with deeper and personalized learning by building teams of educators with distributed expertise and empowering educators by developing better ways to enter the profession, specialize and advance. My primary responsibility is to lead the development and coordination of professional learning experiences for educator teams and school and systems-level leaders at every implementation phase of their shift. Additionally, I lead the development of “train the trainer” materials for our cadre of national support partners.
  • International School Of Zug And Luzern
    Deputy Director
International School Of Zug And Luzern Jul 2019 - Jun 2023
    Zug, Switzerland
After a year as Director of Learning, the scope of my role expanded. In addition to directing our professional learning and accountability processes, I am tackling more systemic change. As a continuing member of the senior leadership team, my key priority is to advance the conditions for organizational learning and innovation. Core to my work is driving the creation and execution of the school’s strategic plan, including the empowerment of cross-functional projects. Using a collaborative goal-setting methodology designed to meet ambitious, learner-centered goals, I work to create spaces for every member of staff to contribute their talents and stretch to meet their potential in service of our shared mission. This work also includes efforts in shifting to a competency-based recruitment and hiring process, ensuring equitable opportunity for diverse candidates. Why am I grateful for this job? Every day I’m learning more about how to manage a data-informed strategy that is relevant to a community and responsive to our learning. Any job where I can toggle between the big picture and the tiniest of details lights me up. On my best day, you can find me coaching professional growth with a second-grade teacher and their class in the forest, prototyping a new course with 15 and 16-year-olds focused on cultivating compassion and well-being, and analyzing the quality of our decision-making processes as a leadership team. In this job, I get to play with multiple levers in a school system.
  • International School Of Zug And Luzern
    Director Of Learning
International School Of Zug And Luzern Jun 2019 - Jun 2020
    Zug, Switzerland
At this award-winning school recognized for its efforts in environmental stewardship and sustainability, I had the opportunity to play to some of my greatest strengths. Using human-centered design as the foundation of the work, I spearheaded the creation of learning principles and educator competencies designed to elevate the role of the learner in their own learning (students and teachers alike). This role also included coaching a team of curriculum and pedagogical leaders eager to grow their skills and elevate the excellence of teaching and learning at the school. Why am I grateful for this job? I’ve built out professional learning structures in multiple environments and I was eager to integrate new processes and research I’ve been curating and practicing for years. Shifting from a standards-based to a competency-based model in any context always affords me opportunities to clarify my understanding of how to help a community uncover assumptions and mental models, as well as manage the emotions of change. I am also deeply grateful for joining a cohort of master practitioners from around the globe through MIT’s Center for System Awareness, led by Peter Senge and Mette Boell. I continue to work with this cohort to cultivate the practices of compassionate leadership in hopes of someday living in a more just and equitable world.
  • Altschool
    Vp, Pedagogy
    Altschool Nov 2016 - Jun 2019
    San Francisco Bay Area
My primary responsibility was to set and implement the pedagogical direction for AltSchool’s micro-schools and our platform’s product roadmap, adding clarity and learning science to a mission that ensures we live in a world where all children reach their potential. In partnership with a team of designers, engineers, and educators, we created the resources and flexible technology to make possible the shift to personalized learning environments at scale. Why am I grateful for this job? I never aspired to work at a controversial education and technology start-up, but I was blown away by the commitment and ambition to create something that both honors and wants to act on behalf of the uniqueness of every child. Professionally, I was stretched beyond measure, growing as a leader, a business strategist, and as an educator. (You never get more clear about student-centered assessment practices until you have to explain it to an engineer). I loved the pace, I loved the courage and boldness of what we were trying to create, and I loved the people. Every single person was in it for the right reason.
  • The Donnell-Kay Foundation
    Chief Learning Designer, Reschool Colorado
    The Donnell-Kay Foundation Mar 2014 - Nov 2016
    Greater Denver Area
In this role, I was charged with developing the foundational competency-based framework for a new system of learning with students, educators, families, and business and policy leaders. Using human-centered design we launched the inaugural team of learner advocates to partner with families and students to access more expansive learning opportunities across the community. Why am I grateful for this job? The mission of the foundation and the RESCHOOL project in particular resonates deeply with me. Core to our efforts was to address the inequities that exist in our educational system both in and outside of schools. I loved the opportunity to work alongside families, learning providers, and community organizations to address the gaps experienced by so many learners. While at the foundation, it was the first time I utilized human-centered design as an operating system for the work and shifted my paradigm of strategy to one that is discovery-driven.
  • Expeditionary Learning
    Director, Online Professional Development
    Expeditionary Learning Jul 2013 - Mar 2014
    United States
While in this role, I focused on scaling professional learning through differentiated, blended models. As a member of the senior leadership team, I aligned and monitored our national organizational priorities and led the re-design and implementation of key national professional development opportunities as part of the US Department of Education Innovation grant. Core to my work was ensuring the scalability and sustainability of our online and technology-based offerings. Why am I grateful for this job? EL is family. They are a steady heartbeat in US education transformation and in my own life. I will always seek to contribute to ensuring every child has access to equitable excellent outcomes and the opportunity to grow into their unique potential. Every time I return to the organization, I grow as a person and as a professional. In this chapter, I was stretched in my thinking about an educator’s progression in their career, as the grant focused on teachers in the 5-7 year range of practice. It also afforded me the opportunity to learn the nuances of cultivating community in online spaces.
  • Graded - The American School Of São Paulo
    Director, Curriculum And Instruction
Graded - The American School Of São Paulo Jul 2010 - Jul 2013
    São Paulo Area, Brazil
My role at Graded School centered on the learning of students and educators, beginning with the development of a hiring process for senior administrative positions. As Director of Teaching and Learning, I established a curricular review cycle that ensured horizontal and vertical alignment with a new standards-based assessment model. I worked closely with teachers to establish a Framework for Teaching that drove a portfolio-based accountability system, fed into organization-wide learning outcomes, and ensured equitable and transparent teacher leadership opportunities. Why am I grateful for this job? Brazil, the fourth country that I’ve worked in, broadened my intercultural competencies in ways I will be forever grateful. As someone who loved protocols, I appreciated the cultural pushback of so many of my “go-to” practices. I grew considerably as a facilitator of dialogue. The pedagogy and philosophy of Freire run deep with Brazilian educators and alongside my colleagues, I established a firmer stance on education’s role in building “critical consciousness” as a means to create change in people’s own lives.
  • Expeditionary Learning
    Regional Director, Mountain Region
    Expeditionary Learning Jun 2007 - Jun 2010
    Colorado
In partnership with my Co-Director, my primary responsibility was to expand the impact of EL by increasing the number of schools in our network and the quality of EL schools in our region, which included Colorado, Wyoming, and Washington. Although I worked directly in a few of our schools, including the founding of two high schools, I led a team of regional staff developers to deliver differentiated services at 18 different schools. Why am I grateful for this job? In this role I had the privilege to work alongside leaders and educators in rural, indigenous, and urban communities, providing me with a unique lens of public education. I loved the span of responsibilities the role included, from marketing to differentiated strategic planning with principals in a variety of school models, to instructional coaching in a project-based model, to launching a brand new high school focused on cultivating young entrepreneurs in Denver’s Five Point district.
