About Colleen Neely
I'm a copy editor at The Washington Post, where I edit articles and products from across the newsroom for accuracy, style and grammar. I graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.A. in journalism and a minor in global terrorism studies in 2022. I have experience as a reporter and copy editor in several newsrooms such as the Baltimore Business Journal, the Diamondback and Unwind Magazine. I served as copy desk chief at the Diamondback and led the desk of 11 copy editors. In addition to my journalistic interests, I used my terrorism studies background in my role as an hourly research assistant at the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START), headquartered at the University of Maryland. I worked on the Global Terrorism Database, a comprehensive database of terrorism events going back to 1970. In this role, I determined casualty and perpetrator information for the open-source database using our detailed coding protocols.
