Marketing Strategist + Multimedia Sales Specialist | Marin Independent Journal
For a career marketer, working on a sales team in a sales rep capacity for a local newspaper was quite an experience and one I wish I'd had at the start of my career. Eschewing the stereotype of "a salesperson" made room for me to practice being a more empathetic, agile and consultative marketer. The Bay Area News Group helped me expand and modernize my marketing and advertising knowledge base by adding dozens of digital advertising tactics to my base of traditional tactics. I worked with hundreds of clients -- all with different temperaments, needs and capacities. In lieu of selling "advertising products", I sold strategy, development and collaboration. While I'm not a person who is driven by the smell of money, I still managed to retain 100% of the top revenue-generating clients, exceeded 100% retention (except during the pandemic where I offset losses by gaining revenue in other ways) and by the time I left, was told they'd never seen a "salesperson" do what I do the way I did it. (I'm a marketer by instinct, heart and intention, not a salesperson!)
