Was asked to take on a new role created for the development of advance processes that introduced new innovative manufacturing technologies to Apple across multiple product lines including, desktop, portables, iPad, and iPhone. Provided monthly updates to core enclosure manufacturing executive team including senior directors and VP to align teams goals and strategies with their key focus areas. Frequent meetings with Industrial Design and Product Design team to develop new technologies into the design of the enclosures. Projects included inspection automation, welding, surface finishing, and coatings type of processes.Continued the development of Friction Stir Welding across multiple applications from work done as the primary DRI of the FSW development on the iMac as an SME. Worked closely with Automation/Integration vendor on a solution to create an "invisible weld" that ID had tried to achieve with lasers but was not able to fullly realize until I worked on getting FSW from simple test plagues all the way to a final mass production feasible solution.

First week in the new role, was asked to fly to China to fix a 30% yield hitter and ramp blocker issue related to surface finishing process that had a negative impact on the system functionality. Was able to work with the vendor to pull together a root cause analysis plan, develop a new fixture design to improve yield through the process, as well as develop a successful re-work process in case the fixture design improvement didn't work. Presented daily updates to executives on conference calls and was able to increase yield from 70% to 98% in 7days.Introduced wet surface finishing to Apple programs starting with the design of wet surface finishing enclosure designs with the vendors as well as fully getting into the details of water cleanliness requirement, filtration methods, and ensuring dust encapsulation. Enjoyed working on a project to make the working environment safer for all vendor employees and Apple employees working in our factories.Advancement of mechanical polishing process in China working with robot vendors to understand impact of robot posture, calibration of cells, and effectively using the TCP. Created new sanding paths and did multiple media evaluations with various large abrasive media suppliers in the US, Japan, Europe, and China to find the right solution to achieve the "look" Industrial Design was trying to achieve. Developed "Human Method Sanding" process with robots to mimic sanding motions of how a craftsman would manually polish an enclosure. Further developed polishing process to streamline CT and media but achieving the same look for a fraction of the cost.Challenged to figure out how to achieve a lapped mirror surface on a 3D aluminum iPad housing. Developed multiples solutions based on individual enclosure vendors equipment and capabilities. Worked closely with top lapping companies in Japan to understand the details of lapping slurries and lapping pad consumables in order to achieve a 10nm surface roughness.

1 of 2 Lead Manufacturing Engineers for enclosure parts during the prime days for the iPod programs. Alternated coverage of iPod Nano and iPod Touch through different generations with colleague. Developed all manufacturing processes including CNC machining, surface finishing, laser cutting, and laser welding. Worked closely with ID color team on the development and selection of anodizing colors for iPod Nano. Provided the key link between the Product Design and Industrial Design team in Cupertino with the vendor in China to communicate design intent and develop solutions to achieve the pinnacle of design for consumer electronics at the time. Fixed numerous issues and developed a manufacturing cell qualification plan that proved successful for huge volumes of housings per day.

Initially the Supplier Quality Engineer for for iPod accessories including the iPod Nano dock, lanyard, and earbuds. Quickly pulled into being the SQE for the first iPhone. Privelleged to work on a revolutionary product helping to align the vendors and in-region team members on the quality expectations from Industrial Design and Product Design teams. In charge of all enclosure housing and small parts. supported some assembly process development such as the stainless steel logo to housing assembly. Covered various processes including stamping, punching, blast, anodizing, CNC milling, lapping, mirror polishing, gluing, assembly processes, MIM, and PVD. Introduced laser inspection for gaps and offsets to Apple Enclosure with the successful development and implementation on a solution used in mass production.
