Ai Subject Matter Expert
Artificial Intelligence Developer
Recently assigned to a new project advising on and developing AI capabilities as a contractor for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Screening at Speed program.Cleans, labels, and preprocesses raw data from novel scanner technology in preparation for deep neural network construction and training in the second phase of the project. With minimal guidance and supervision, I conceived, designed, and led production of a reward function shaping mechanism to upgrade the prototype Adversarial Modeling for Simulating Aviation Security (AMSAS). This is a currently patented adversarial reinforcement learning system for simulating security checkpoint environments (U.S. Patent 11,423,157). I am working with the original inventors on a follow-up patent to cover the reward function shaping mechanism.Upgraded AMSAS codebase and user interface (UI) utilizing Python, Kivy, Vim, and GitHub, which senior leadership commended for client-focused development and improvements.Initiated and coordinated needs analysis for a variety of potential clients, leading to expansion of AMSAS applications. This enhanced the program’s capabilities beyond DHS Transportation Security Administration (TSA) use to include Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Federal Bureau of Prisons (BoP), and Federal Protective Service (FPS) applications These improvements addressed needs of various law enforcement activities and meeting federal expectations for common platform use.
Research Fellow
Conducts research on AI approaches to multi-modal data fusion using toolkits from computer vision and natural language processing to make property predictions on energetic molecules for Department of Defense (DoD) applications, including industrial and military explosive design, high-density energy storage, and propellant research.Leading discussions and coauthoring a report on AI’s role in Internal Revenue Service (IRS) modernization as an advisor to Kogod Tax Policy Center (KTPC) Managing Director, Caroline Bruckner. This report is commissioned by the IBM Center for the Business of Government following a roundtable discussion hosted by IBM and KTPC that include global tax agency leaders and had opening remarks from IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel. Supervises between 2 and 4 research assistants working on development and deployment of various projects. Current work is on hallucinations in text generated by ChatGPT about chemistry subject matter and natural language processing techniques to determine impact of women witnesses in the legislative process.Developed a novel machine learning classifier to recover data on Congressional witnesses, achieving a 38% reduction in error compared to other state-of-the-art approaches. This algorithm was developed and tested in under one month and is the subject of a forthcoming paper.Briefed the U.S. House of Representatives Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) on the ongoing work using AI to detect bias in Congressional witness panels and on the results of prior proposals. One such proposal led to a 7.4% increase in the chance of women testifying in legislative hearings.Developed collaborative relationships with critical stakeholders, including the IRS, IBM, ODI, and others to develop solutions for mutually-supporting goals in a variety of spheres, such as IRS modernization, mitigating gender bias, and AI implementation.
Teaching Assistant
Supported students in Real Analysis (Math-420) by providing timely feedback on grades and offering office hours.Oversaw student understanding of material in Calculus II (MATH-222) and Foundations of Math (MATH-403) courses.Wrote homework and exam questions for Calculus II that were commended by the professor for their creativity and ability to clearly guide students through complex course materials.
Supplemental Instruction Leader
Simultaneously supported two class sections of Calculus II (MATH-222).Hosted supplemental instruction sessions to solidify their understanding of the course material.Attended lectures to provide in-class support to students.
Dna Digital Data Storage Intern
Explored technological and algorithmic improvements for advancing DNA digital data storage, a novel technique that dramatically reduces energy requirements and climate impact of data storage.Investigated methods to integrate DNA data storage technology into existing data infrastructure.Authored a white paper that was distributed to select senior technology development executives at the Department of Defense (DoD). This paper discussed a technique to store computer information on synthetic DNA, leading to increased energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions.
Student Trainee
Worked with the I&A Chief of Staff to disseminate business intelligence and build partnerships across the organization and with external stakeholders, including U.S. Senators and Representatives, state and local law enforcement, and other partner organizations across the U.S. Intelligence Community.Designed and implemented automated workflows and trackers to facilitate application of agile development methodologies to classified projects, leading to increased team efficiency.Authored a report on counterterrorism activities and drew attention to previously unidentified critical vulnerabilities. The report was commended by a U.S. Representative and led to increased law enforcement activities to protect the at-risk facilities.
