- Provided process engineering input during the detailed engineering design for the Bulyanhulu Process Plant Expansion Project in Tanzania, including operational readiness issues.- Launched a total revamp of the mine’s integrated water management plan, looking at all aspects of securing water resources, storage and distribution, optimisation of water use, water treatment and release.- On-site construction and commissioning supervision and inspections.

My first two years at Bateman was spent mostly on commissioning activities; first as Commissioning Engineer for the Venetia Primary Crusher Project near Musina and thereafter for the Damtshaa Double-up Project in Botswana. I consulted on a variety of design issues during the Letseng Pre-feasibility Study and conducted a pre-feasibility study for a uranium plant for Harmony. I was later appointed as the Commissioning Manager for the Letseng Diamond Mine “Double-up” Project, where I fulfilled the coordinating function in all related commissioning activities. After the Letseng Project, I was transferred to the Engineering Department, where I was the Project Engineer for the Mechel Ferro-Nickel Demo Smelter Project located in Russia. During 2009, I was assigned to the Cooke Uranium Project as Project Engineer (Environmental Interfaces). The study included the hydraulic reclamation of an old slimes dam and the construction of a new green-fields tailings storage facility, where I was responsible for the effective interfacing between the uranium plant design and the environmental specialist studies, as well as overseeing the engineering design of the hydraulic reclamation and the tailings storage facility. In 2010 I was appointed as Commissioning Manager for the Debswana Jwaneng Cut-8 Project, and thereafter as the Commissioning Manager for the Ambatovy Lime Plant located in Madagascar.

Although my primary function was that of a metallurgist, due to our rotation schedule, part of my function was also to act as Production Superintendent. One of my notable projects was to improve water consumption and the water quality of the plant due to the remoteness of site, being at high altitude in sub-zero temperature conditions. I was responsible for the establishment of a process sample laboratory and associated work procedures, while also fulfilling all the necessary functions as the Radiation Officer for the mine. I had to oversee all technical projects, manage and coordinate production, ensure safety as prescribed by NOSA, train and develop the local Basotho workforce, coordinate planned maintenance and control the plant’s budget.

My primary function was that of a metallurgist, where I was responsible for various plant optimisation and metallurgical test work programmes. Of my notable projects were the optimisation of the High-Pressure Roll Crushers, process improvements in the DMS Cones Plant, the investigation of high-density paste & co-disposal technology and alternative water clarification technologies. I obtained production management experience whilst acting as an Ore Processing Superintendent on several occasions, where I was responsible for the co-ordination and management of production, maintenance, budgets and the safety and loss control programme. Of particular importance was my involvement in the management and maintenance of the slimes dam (tailings storage facility), where I was responsible for the implementation of an Emergency Preparedness Plan as part of an environmental impact assessment. I successfully acted as a mentor for several university students who had to complete mine projects as part of their curriculum.

My primary function was that of a metallurgist, where I was responsible for various plant optimisation and metallurgical test work programmes. I was also responsible for the plant laboratory and the various technical reports, including metal accounting. I obtained production management experience on gold, uranium, pyrite flotation and sulphuric acid plants, which ranged from acting as a Shift Foreman during my studies to acting as the Plant Production Superintendent, where I was responsible for the daily production targets, safety performance, cost control and HR issues. I was fundamental in the implementation of a radiation control programme on the mine, where I qualified as a Radiation Protection Officer.
