About Vivienne Collins Mapplings, Tesol. Ba Linguistics

NOTE: Due to the ongoing uncertainty around COVID, lessons will continue to be delivered via video conferencing, in order to protect the health of us all.With 20 years' experience as an ESL teacher and a background in Systemic Functional Linguistics, together with having learned three foreign languages myself, I have a comprehensive grasp of what it takes to be a good L2 teacher. I lived, and taught English as a Second Language, in Europe, both in large schools and as a private tutor, for 5 years. As a qualified and experienced Drama Teacher I also taught Drama to groups of Upper Advanced students there, in order for them to expand their range of English comprehension and output.I have a Master's degree in Applied Linguistics (TESOL), with a focus on Cross-Cultural Communication. I undertook this stream in order to be able to give students of English the cultural background they need in order to move around the English-speaking world confidently. I teach individuals and groups from Beginner to University level. My background in Systemic Functional Linguistics, the grammar of which provides the scaffolding for CLT(Communicative Language Teaching) a pedagogy popular in language teaching today, provides me with unique tools with which to teach a foreign language. I have the advantage of formal grammar training as well as expertise in Systemic Functional Grammar so I can not only teach the 'what' but also the 'why' and the 'how'. I also incorporate aspects of several other pedagogies in my teaching, including but not limited to the Structural Approach, the Silent Way, and Task Based Learning.I am also highly-skilled in training clients on how to give Presentations and Seminars, and how to be a successful, professional and relaxed Public Speaker. My background in Theatre, ten years in Managerial roles in one of Australia's leading Universities, and other key roles in business, including as a Marketing Manager, together with my ESL qualifications and experience, have given me a wide enough range of experience and a large enough skills set to satisfy the needs of any English language learner.
