Senior Physiotherapist In Neurosurgery/Oncology
As the lead physiotherapist for the Oncology and Neurosurgery teams my role is varied and challenging. I take a lead role in the assessment, treatment and physiotherapy management of children with a broad range of conditions. From an oncology perspective I see patients with haematological cancers, bone tumours, other solid tumours and brain tumours. My role is to ensure that they receive the highest standard of physiotherapy care whilst at Alder Hey and that their rehabilitation needs are also met when they are at home. There is a large degree of overlap between my oncology and neurosurgery caseloads as I predominantly see patients following brain tumour resection on the neurosurgical ward. However, I also see a variety of neurosurgical patients including patient with Neural Tube Defects, hydrocephalus, head injuries and spinal injuries. As a Senior Physiotherapist my role has a mix of clinical and non clinical elements. I am responsible for the supervision and mentorship of 3 rotational physiotherapists (2 full time, one halftime) and 3 physiotherapy assistants. I am also a clinical educator to physiotherapy students whilst on placement with the Acute Neuro Physio team. Contributing to research and audit is also a large part of my role. I collect data for the CMS study at Alder Hey and am a patient assessor for the ASPECT Trial. Audit and service development are important elements of my role. Since January, with other senior colleagues, I helped design and implement our transition from paper notes to digital notes and ensured that KPIs could be monitored from our digital documentation. I also completed a survey of patients of parents on the oncology unit in relation to their perceptions of physical activity, their levels of activity and what barriers they face in being active. Currently, with the assistance of a rotational staff member, I am developing a multifaceted intervention to increase oncology patients activity levels whilst in hospital and whilst at home.
Senior Orthopaedic Physiotherapist Specialising In Multi-Level Surgery (Maternity Cover)
In this role I was responsible for the rehabilitation of children with Cerebral Palsy who undergo orthopaedic surgery. Working with children across all GMFCS levels I ensured that they received the highest standard of physiotherapy provision whilst at Alder Hey and ensured that there was a smooth transition to community services when they were discharged home. I was involved throughout these patients whole surgical journey; reviewing them in clinic pre-operatively, ensuring early mobilisation and promoting independence in the immediate post operative period and taking the lead for their intensive rehabilitation inpatient stay. Ensuring that the patient was at the centre of our service was at the core of my role: by providing child friendly information pre operatively I tried to ensure that they understood what surgery they are having and what the surgery hoped to achieve. Preoperatively each child and their parents are asked to inform the physiotherapy team what worked well for them and what did not, to allow us to tailor their rehab programme to their needs. On discharge each child and family were asked for feedback on how we as a team met their needs/concerns to allow us to ensure that we keep the children at the centre of how we work. Working in a specialist service encouraged our team to collect data and make a contribution to the evidence of CP management. I undertook 2 clinical audits: "Evaluation of Parent and Patient Satisfaction with physiotherapy provision following Single Level Multi-Level Surgery" and "A review of the Orthopaedic Inpatient service". In conjunction with another Band 7 colleague I also researched the application of "Enhanced Recovery After Surgery" pathways in orthopaedic surgery and designed a pathway with other members of the MDT in an effort to improve how elective orthopaedic surgeries are planned at Alder Hey in order to improve patient outcomes and facilitate better communication within the MDT and with community teams.
