During my internship in Medtronic I had an opportunity to work on two projects, each of which were invaluable learning experiences.The first 6 months of my internship involved a lot of Human Factors Engineering work to update a component of a product that was already on the market. It was important that this work did not negatively impact it's usability in any way. During this time I learned a lot about 6 Sigma methodology, designing fixtures for testing and how to gain actionable insights from the end-consumers of the device we were working on.My second 6 months in Medtronic was largely focused on research and testing. I was one of the first members of the team that began designing a delivery system for a next generation product in the product pipeline. This project gave me an opportunity to become very familiar with catheter based delivery systems, their designs and manufacturing processes. I also became very familiar with the design verification process and test method development for the product as our team needed to be sure we were using the best test methods available to us.Another huge asset in this design project was that I got to perform a large number of tests against competitor devices which further cemented my understanding of catheter based delivery system design.

I was a part of the pre-sterilisation shipping team in Boston Scientific for a year, during which time I learned about internal product management software, shipping requirements, medical device packaging, and sterilisation methods.

As part of my degree, I joined the Novate Medical team as a Student Engineer. I worked mainly with the R&D team on various projects while I was there. I also had an opportunity to work on projects for the regulatory and quality departments. My responsibilities changed regularly to allow me to gain as much experience as possible.

This part-time role involved everything from working on the cash registers, stock management, dealing with customer queries and ensuring that all areas were kept clean.
