Optical Team Lead for the design and development of the optics and sensors used for LED illumination and imaging in Tomra’s industrial optical food sorters.Using Zemax OpticStudio for optical simulation and modelling of new LED illumination optics and imaging geometries.Using Altium for the electronic PCB design and layout of LED illumination modules and logic boards.Developed mass production jigs for quality control of pulsed LED illumination modules and linescan camera module alignment.Engage in regular communication with the production facility in Slovakia to address any quality or technical issues that arise in the production of released products.Responsible for technical and commercial validation of new suppliers of optical sources, CCD/CMOS cameras, optics and optoelectronic hardware.

Project manager with the Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC) on a strategic industry project.Client is a Silicon Valley start-up developing an ultra compact optical coherence tomography (OCT) based imaging platform using miniature optics. Applications include wearable point-of-care medical diagnostic sensors to provide need to know biometrics to the end user and robust biometric security sensors.Negotiated the project statement of work with the client and in charge of project delivery tracked with Microsoft Project 2013.Responsible for optical system design using Zemax and the operation of a state-of-the-artoptoelectronic active alignment workstation for prototype assembly.Supervising mechanical design activity undertaken using SolidWorks.

Responsible for the optical design and development of LED illumination systems (Highbay, linear fluorescent tube replacement, grow lights etc.) for use in supermarket, refrigerated case, warehousing, factory floor, underground car park, office space and horticulture lighting applications.Specialist technical and commercial knowledge of the LED market. Strong working relationship with top tier suppliers such as Nichia, OSRAM, Seoul Semiconductor, Cree, Luminus, Philips Lumileds, Bridgelux, Stanley etc.Work closely with Nualight sales and product management to specify new product concepts arising out of customer requirements.Collaborate with Nualight manufacturing and quality teams to transition new designs to mass production.Design of optical elements such as lenses (moulded and extruded) and reflectors using LTI Optics Photopia optical design software.Lighting design validation using Dialux light planning software.Patent novel optical designs. Project managed a research grant to investigate solutions to enable flexible and adaptive optical transceivers for next generation optical transport networks.Simulated and experimentally verified a means to generate a flexible optical frequency comb source from a single monochromatic laser using a dual parallel electro-optic modulator for use in such transceivers.Experienced operator of state-of-the-art lasers, optical amplifiers, electro-optic components and high-speed optical/microwave measurement equipment.Presented research at national and international conferences.Supervised Ph.D. students working on various research projects.Assisted in the procurement of equipment and consumables.Organised the Tyndall Photonic Seminar Series 2010/2011.

Educated in the fundamentals of optical physics. Gained experience in the areas of photonic systems design, optoelectronics and fiber optics.Main research project involved the design and development of an actively mode-locked semiconductor fiber ring laser for use as an ultra-high speed single/multiple wavelength optical pulse source.Involved in experimental research to investigate pattern effect suppression in a semiconductor optical amplifier using a periodic all-fiber filter.Successfully collaborated with other researchers from Ireland and Europe on these projects.Presented research results at internationally recognised conferences and in peer reviewed journals.Took ownership of procurement duties within the group and worked closely with suppliers.Supervised undergraduate students in their laboratory classes and undertook the role of peer supported learning group (PSLG) student leader for electronic engineering undergraduate students.

Based in the Optical Communications Research Group in the department of Electronic and Computer Engineering.Researched optical communications systems, semiconductor optical amplifiers, control theory and analogue electronics. An analogue circuit model of my B.Eng. final year project hardware, based on a parametric amplifier using a field effect transistor (FET), was developed during this period.

Based in the operations department of the Business Continuity and Recovery Services (BC&RS) arm of IBM’s Global Services operations in Dublin.Project managed the implementation of a new database to provide value-add to the IBM BC&RS service management team.Delivered reports and presentations to senior management regarding optimisation of IBM’s communication line syndication for its BC&RS customers.
