Colt Kranig Email and Phone Number
I developed a love for travel and experiencing other cultures at a young age through traveling with my flight attendant mother. After graduating with a B.A. in philosophy, I sought to immerse myself in another culture by living abroad and teaching EFL. In 2016, I accepted an entry level teaching position at Amity, an English Eikaiwa in Gifu, Japan. I quickly fell in love with teaching and extended my contract, staying two years. With the aim of making English education my career path, I enrolled in the M.A. TESOL program at San Francisco State University. During my time at SF State, I was a teaching assistant and student teacher in a freshman writing course and a freshman grammar course, I became the treasurer and a team leader for Project SHINE which organized TAships for adult ESL courses at San Francisco Community College, and I earned a 4.0 in my graduate courses. After graduation, I moved to Valparaíso, Chile and began teaching both online for VIPKid (an English education platform in China) and locally with The International Center (a South American based English Academy). The pandemic offered me an opportunity to teach professors from the Univeridad de Chile through The International Center’s partnership with the University’s professional development department. During my two years in Chile, I developed my skills as an online English educator for both children and adults in these two very different settings. I returned to California in 2021 and began working as a curriculum developer with Schoolbird. I have been working with the Schoolbird team to develop a variety of application based EFL curriculum, create social media content, present in TESOL conferences, and participate in brainstorming and system learning activities. I continue to pursue my research interests of developing learning communities and I am applying that interest to the creation of the Schoolbird application.

English Second Language TeacherVipkid Aug 2019 - PresentVIPKid has been an excellent opportunity for me to develop myself as an online English educator. I was able to apply my skills and experience teaching English to kids in Japan to this online Chinese platform. I learned to provide engaging lessons to kids of all different ages. VIPKid also requires feedback for each 1 on 1 lesson, so I was able to improve my written feedback and assessment skills. I became certified and taught many different types of classes, including conversation, TOEFL, reading, story telling, and vocabulary classes. My students range from 4 to 16 years old and classes are 25-58 minutes. -
English Second Language TeacherThe International Center Sep 2019 - Jul 2021Viña Del Mar, Valparaíso, ChileThe International Center is an English language institute based in South America. I started working as a private English tutor at their Vina Del Mar center when I arrived in Chile. I taught several private classes to adult learners of various levels. When the pandemic hit Chile, the classes were moved online which provided opportunities to work with students outside my city. I was contracted to teach small group lessons to the professors at Universidad de Chile through their professional development department Uperdoc. We focused on improving their pronunciation and presentation skills for professional conferences and grammatical accuracy for formal and informal writing. I was able to improve my online education skills and work with adult professional learners who need English for specific purposes in their careers.

English Second Language TeacherAmity Jul 2015 - Jul 2017Gifu, Gifu, JapanAmity is a English institute for Children based in Japan. This was my first teaching position and a great introduction to my career as and English educator. Amity offered my wife and I both full time teaching positions at their school in Gifu. They provided initial and follow up training to all teachers as well as professional development support through out our contracts. I taught conversational and TOEFL classes to students ages 6 months (really just teaching mom to play with their baby in English and get them used to foreign teachers) to high schoolers. I absolutely fell in love with teaching at this school and extended my contract another year. Amity provided me with an excellent opportunity to gain teaching experience and develop my teacher identify, but I wanted more theoretical knowledge in order to become the best teacher I could be. My wife and I realized we wanted to continue teaching ESL/EFL as our careers, so we decided to move back to California to get our Master's degrees in TESOL at San Francisco State University.
