About Cory Combs

Cory Combs is an established non-profit leader, educator, lecturer, bassist, and composer living in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has performed with many internationally known artists, recorded multiple CDs as a leader, and lectured frequently on the intersection of arts and world culture.Combs is currently the Executive Director of Stanford Jazz Workshop, an celebrated non-profit with the mission to educate, entertain, and inspire a community of artists, students, and audience members through the study, performance, and appreciation of jazz. Previously, he served as Executive Director of InterMusic SF, a non-profit arts organization dedicated to supporting professional musicians in the San Francisco Bay Area through programs including fiscal sponsorship, grant making, major civic music festivals, and professional development.As a lecturer and historian, Combs has presented at the Asian Art Museum, The Jewish Community Center, SFJAZZ, Davies Symphony Hall, Herbst Theater, City College, San Francisco State University, the Fullerton Museum, the Pacific Asian Museum, and on the radio program Forum. Combs has performed on-stage interviews with numerous performing artists, including Archie Shepp, Ornette Coleman, Toumani Diabate, Hiromi, James Moody, Kevin Eubanks, Bill Frisell, John Scofield, and Bobby McFerrin.Prior to joining InterMusic SF, he directed the Outreach, Music, and Enrichment departments at the Nueva School, a Blue Ribbon Award Winning K-12 school in Silicon Valley. Before his tenure at Nueva, Combs served as Director of Education at SFJAZZ, the non-profit organization behind the San Francisco Jazz Festival. At SFJAZZ, he was a member of the leadership team that envisioned and executed the SFJAZZ Center. Previously he was Music Director at Waldorf High School in San Francisco and taught music technology, performance and music history classes at schools throughout the Bay Area. Additionally, Combs directed the jazz program at the American Festival of the Arts in Houston, Texas.Combs earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Eastman School of Music where he studied classical music performance and jazz composition.
