Stanford Jazz Workshop’s mission is to educate, entertain, and inspire a community of artists, students, and audience members through the study, performance, and appreciation of jazz — an original American musical form. Founded in 1972, Stanford Jazz Workshop is a leading jazz education and presenting organization known for its curriculum and educational model in which young jazz musicians study with renowned faculty in an intensive workshop setting. The summer program, in particular, enables students to have tailored learning and one-on-one support, build community, play and learn across generations, and access and interact with jazz masters in informal ways.

Combs has presented numerous sold out lectures on music history and its defining role in worldwide societies. Venues include Davies Symphony Hall, the San Francisco Masonic Center, Great American Music Hall, Palace of Fine Arts, the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, the Pacific Asian Museum, the Fullerton Museum, the Mondavi Center, the San Francisco Jewish Community Center, the San Francisco Public Library, Herbst Theater, City College, San Francisco State University, and on Forum with Michael Krasny. As an interviewer, Combs has shared the stage with international performing artists, including Archie Shepp, Bill Frisell, John Scofield, Toumani Diabate, Hiromi, Kevin Eubanks, Joe Lovano, the SFJAZZ Collective, and Booker T., among others.

Director of advanced Jazz EnsembleCo-Director of Nueva Summer, a six-week public summer camp for K-8th grade students, including developing curriculum, hiring and managing 70 plus faculty members, managing advertising and sales, developing and deploying successful annual expansion plans, managing budgets, communications, summer campus operations, student and parent issues, and all other areas of camp execution. At SFJAZZ, the non-profit behind the San Francisco Jazz Festival, Combs created and directed six national-level music education programs, including a three-year integrated curriculum offered at all San Francisco public middle schools. Additionally, he served as a key member of the senior team that directed the mission and vision of the organization, including the successful design and launch of the $60 million SFJAZZ Center Capital Campaign. As Director of Education, Combs was frequently engaged as the public spokesman for the organization as an educator, in all press arenas, and with key fund raising and diversity efforts.

Houston, Texas Area

During his four years as Jazz Program Director at the prestigious American Festival of the Arts in Houston, Texas, Combs directed the jazz program, hired national-level faculty, developed the daily and weekly schedule, solidified programming, and launched new curriculum for both middle and high school students.

During his first tenure at the Nueva School, Combs assisted in the creation and expansion of the Middle School elective program. During the curricular expansion, he created, instructed, and helped institutionalize electives including filmmaking, rock band, music theory, composition, improvisation ensemble, rock history, and electronic music.

As Director of Music at San Francisco Waldorf Middle and High School, along with conducting all instrumental music classes, Combs hired and directed the music faculty, designed and implemented curriculum, supported the successful school expansion project, and assisted in the management of all school affairs.

As Founder and Director of the San Francisco Bass Weekend, Combs provided the opportunity for bass enthusiasts of all ages to enjoy two-day intensive workshops on all aspects of instrumental performance. As Director he secured funding and sponsorships, developed content, schedule, and curriculum, secured venues, hired artists, scheduled guest presenters, and solicited successful in-kind donations.
