  • Flippin' Pain
    Campaign Manager
Flippin' Pain Dec 2022 - Present
    Sheffield, England, United Kingdom
What most people believe about pain isn’t the full picture. Scientists have learnt a lot more about how pain works over the past 50 years, but very little of this knowledge has filtered down.Knowing more about how pain works has been proven to change the way people see and treat long-term pain: it can reduce the fear around it and can even change how pain feels. This could make an overwhelming difference to people suffering.More than 28 million people in the UK are affected by long-term (sometimes called ‘chronic’ or ‘persistent’) pain, pain that has lasted longer than 3 months. It’s often a daily struggle: but we're here to help.Flippin’ Pain is a public health movement that shares the latest science of pain with the people who need it the most. Working with commissioners and people living with long-term pain themselves, we create resources and free, fun, informative events to explain the (often surprising) science behind why we hurt.We deliver an engaging approach known as ‘pain science education’, demonstrating the importance of not just the biological influences on pain, but the key psychological and social factors that have influence as well. Endorsed by the British Pain Society and the European Pain Federation, Flippin’ Pain is aimed at both public and professional audiences, engaging, educating and empowering everyone who is involved in the journey. Better self-management can reduce reliance on services as well as risky medication and surgery: but healthcare design doesn’t always reflect the latest understanding of pain. Flippin’ Pain therefore arms professionals with the confidence and tools to achieve better outcomes. There’s even evidence that a ‘flipped’ understanding of pain could help to prevent people from having long-term pain in the future. As they say, knowledge is power: and this knowledge empowers people to take back control and re-engage with their recovery, bringing new hope to millions.
