Applied Systems Validation & Software Engineer
CurrentThe Verification & Validation (V&V) team was started at PassiveLogic to bring rigorous testing to the ecosystem of products. There are 4 teams within V&V: 1) Hardware Testing; 2) User Software Testing; 3) Hive Software Testing; 4) Applied Systems Testing.My job as the Applied Systems lead is to demonstrate the Hive software can control buildings. This is primarily done in 3 steps: 1) Demonstration of some controls objective in a software environment; 2) Demonstration of the controls objective using our test wall & weather maker infrastructure; 3) Deployment into a real world project. I collaborate across our hardware, software, and field support teams to design, execute, and analyze experiments to objectively measure performance across a range of metrics: control objectives (i.e. how well does it maintain comfort, etc.); hardware & platform performance (i.e. CPU utilization, RAM, SSD temperature, etc.).While on the team I have also collaborated to design & build control boxes (power distribution & custom PCBs) to enable us to gracefully transition from previous control systems to our new system in a way that is minimally disruptive to occupants.---From October 23 - February 24 I transitioned to working on the QuantumLens application. I wrote user stories & application requirements, fixed bugs, assisted with SwiftUI application development & application geometry logic, as well as performed end-to-end integration testing with BuildingStudio.
Software Engineer
I worked on the Platform and Quantum Digital Twins team. My primary responsibilities were to lead the development and internal technical documentation of Quantum (a data modeling standard for autonomous building systems), as well as maintain and develop ORM APIs for the Swift programming language and integrate those into our control software. This included writing a database (Postgres) migration tool (Swift); creating and maintaining code generation tooling to maintain consistent APIs across frontend and backend infrastructure; and documenting and communicating data modeling decisions/changes. I collaborated heavily across the Platform, AI/Controls, Cloud, User Software, and Digital Twins team.While on the Platform team, we migrated our codebase from a mono-repo xcodeproject to run on linux. This enabled execution on x86 and ARM CI infrastructure as well as NVIDIA Jetson/Orin platforms. The mono-repo was also broken up into multiple repositories, transitioned to be fully SPM based, and rely on semantic versioning.

It is built on the BEDES data dictionary and is designed to support Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) at scale, where auditing is a key mechanism for reducing energy consumption in existing buildings (see NY Local Law 87). Schematron is being used for data validation of different use cases (Level 1, Level 2 audits).BuildingSync-gem:A wrapper around OpenStudio and OpenStudio Standards enabling the auto-generation of energy models from BuildingSync XML documents. Users can define measures within the BuildingSync XML document to run an OpenStudio Workflow, and the results of the different analysis scenarios is re-serialized back into the BuildingSync XML document. This was used, for example, in the BayREN Integrated Commercial Retrofits (BRICR) project and is also being used in the Energy Data Vault (EDV) project.Alfalfa:An application designed to expose a RESTful interface on top of an energy model (OpenStudio, EnergyPlus, and maybe soon SPAWN). The simulation can be advanced by an external client or advance on its own at a pre-defined interval. The RESTful interface uses the Haystack API specification, enabling users to read or write to sensor and control points during model run.NREL's Commercial Buildings Research Infrastructure (CBRI):Help manage the deployment of the Alfalfa application along with Streamsets, communicating to other applications via Kafka, for interaction between digital representations of buildings (energy models) with physical equipment.bsyncr:A wrapper around kW-Engineering's nmecr package for serializing NMEC style calculations via BuildingSync.Working with Haystack, Brick, and ASHRAE 223p to advance these bodies of workWorking with DoD clients on supporting the roll out of advanced smart building applications
