About Alan Davies

Retirement has reached me. Unsought, but willing to help by sharing my many skills on a part time voluntary basis with local charities and schools.Left Claydon High School, on the outskirts of Ipswich. Nice staff and students. Worked under my Network Manager colleague who also has just left. Her and I made a good team, but not being at the helm was hard. I've so much experience behind me and many ideas I'd like to put into play. I see so many ways that the current network could be improved. Under the right leadership it'll get there though. My job at Hartismere School in Eye, Suffolk as both Network Manager and one day a week as Teacher of ICT was my ideal job. Loved the teaching and managing the network.Like to think of myself as highly motivated, independent and liking to get a job done. Am fortunate to have these two big interests to keep me fully occupied. Keep up to date on all the latest iterations of Microsoft and Apple software, and am always proposing how this can be integrated into our network.I am keen on using the infrastructure to automate many of the day to day network jobs.Wide experience in a wide range of posts in various schools from Head of Department to Network Managing.Have suggested and seen through many new developments in my previous roles.Set up my own company for a while - ComputerAware (Helping you get the most out of your IT kit) - to keep my IT skills honed and up to date.Still looking for the right opportunity in a school or other network (preferably manager) role.

Listed skills include Teaching, Non Profit Volunteering, Networking, Network Design, and 28 others.

Ict Technician

Claydon High School

Claydon, Ipswich

Back in a real school. Friendly students and staff, but my skills are not being fully utilised as a plain technician. Have a good working relationship with my IT Manager. Helping and advising her and sorting Group Policy, Active Directory, roaming desktops, new wireless implementation. Currently looking at the introduction of Windows 10, and adding appropriate tweaks the Group Policy to accommodate it. Created virtual machine to make online classroom booking. Added a couple of NAS boxes to substantially increase the amount of network storage for staff, and created shared drives so staff can access them. Due to long term absence of colleague in resources, now added running resources office to my list of skills.Really would love to be back advising and running my own network, though. So many ideas and skills at present that I can't put into play.

Spent the time after leaving Hartismere keeping my skills up to date by running 'ComputerAware' in the village where I live, helping people with all their IT needs. An interesting time in many respects: met many lovely people and learned much from solving their very individual problems.Still get the occasional phone call asking for help!

Coordinator Of Science

Kirkley Middle School

Lowestoft, Suffolk

One of my biggest achievements, working at one of the most difficult schools in Suffolk, now closed.Over 50% of students were on free school means, at least 5 highly disruptive students in each class. There had been no coordinator for over a year when I arrived, (the previous one on long term sick leave), a syllabus and prep room in tatters and with the help of many supportive colleagues and a forward thinking Head at the time the school did marvellous things with these kids.Learned a lot about assertive discipline and the importance of reinforcing for children what they do well, not what they are doing badly.Volunteered for the lighting in the school plays.

1995 - 2001 ~6 yrs

Head Of Science

Finborough School, Stowmarket

Stowmarket, Suffolk

An independent day and boarding school founded to cater for manly forces children.Lead the Science Department for 5 years, moving and updating the syllabus towards modern, exciting Single, Dual and Triple award Science from the more traditional separate sciences which was unsuitable for the majority of the students at the time.Additional role of House Master in the boarding side of things. Big insights into the care and wellbeing of young students away from their parents for the first time.Latterly a big influx of Hong Kong Chinese students gave me the challenge of mixing with students whose first language was other than English. Allowed me to learn some choice expressions for teaching students in class.First time I was able to introduce computing into the classroom. Organised Canoeing activities on the local river.Created a garden for students to grow their own vegetables.

1990 - 1995 ~5 yrs

Head Of Physics

Finborough School

Stowmarket, Suffolk

My first insight into independent education, after moving down from the north east. My northern accent was a big amusement to the mainly forces 'British accent' students

1987 - 1990 ~3 yrs

Teaching In The North East

Sunderland, United Kingdom

Teaching and all that goes with it is my first love.Founder member of a joint operation between the school and the local YMCA to rent, renovate cottage in the Scottish Borders for outward bound activities.Chief fundraiser at the school for the above. Organised jumble sales and Christmas raffles.Proficient in outdoor pursuits such as canoeing, rock climbing, fell walking.Obtained grants from local charities to allow needy kids a break from 'city' life.School play 'special' effects/lighting.Photography classes after school and GCE Photography extracurricular.
