I am a science educator and recent graduate from the University of Alberta with a Science and Education degree. Throughout my work and volunteer experience, I developed a passion for designing and implementing accessible and engaging educational opportunities for youth in STEM. I harness my science and education background as an employee at the TELUS World of Science - Edmonton and as a board member with TeamUP Science and mentor to two FIRST Robotics teams. Both my education and field experience develop my pedagogical philosophy that you can check out below! Outside of the science and education realm, my hobbies include music performance, rock climbing, cycling, recording and editing videos, playing games (board games and videogames), and take non-consensual pictures of insects and other arthropods. My pedagogical philosophy involves the intersection of performance, technology, creativity, and research. As a musician and educator, I am no stranger to performances. Effective delivery, dynamic tone, critical timing, and occasional laughter makes a huge impact on audience engagement and is a crucial skill during my STEM presentations and demonstrations. Technology is a powerful way to make learning accessible and engaging. My teaching style utilizes computers, cameras, audio equipment, presentation software, video editing software, 3D printers, and much more. Creativity is the power to turn a passive lecture into an active learning project where students have choice and creative freedom. I am partial to designing immersive and competitive games that integrate STEM or constructivist projects that force students to generate tangible products while developing real-world hard skills. Finally, hours spent thorough research is critical in ensuring the efficacy of teachable STEM knowledge. Research keeps lessons current and is a skill I could not confidently teach without.
