Fred is a licensed architect and landscape architect born in Santa Barbara, California, who has a diverse background in the creation of a variety of institutional, public, and private projects at a range of scales. After obtaining his Bachelor of Architecture from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, he worked eight years at architecture offices across California. Afterward, wanting to broaden his understanding of the relationship between architecture and site, led to his graduate studies at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where he was awarded a Master of Landscape Architecture with Honors. While at graduate school, his interest in landscape focused primarily on with the profession’s inherent capacity for changes and adaptations from the given environment, whether it is from weather, seasons, or users. Upon leaving RISD, Fred received his department’s travel fellowship with which he continued his research on how landscape can be infused into storm- and wastewater systems. One of this student projects, a proposal for a Berlin Wall Memorial, won ASLA's Award of Excellence in General Design, the organization’s highest student design award in its annual international competition. Fred's submittal for the Sandy Hook Elementary School Permanent Memorial was a semi-finalist, and for a while one of four designs under consideration as a finalist.Recently Fred was a senior associate at Spurlock Landscape Architects, working on a diverse portfolio of projects ranging from housing projects, parks, botanical gardens across the country, neighborhood plans, corporate campuses, and higher education outdoor spaces. Fred teaches at San Diego's NewSchool of Architecture in Design where he has taught architecture and landscape architecture lecture and studio courses. Presently Fred teaches an introduction to landscape architecture where he is able to merge both sides of his professional career.
