Conner took on a huge challenge by going to college in New York far from his home in Savannah, Georgia. He left everything he had known his entire life to go to college at State University of New York Maritime College. Conner was thrown into a new environment surrounded by new people. This change gave him many challenges. During his sophomore year, Conner was selected as a Section Chief Squad Leader for Section 5. As a Section Chief Squad Leader, he was given the task of overlooking six Squad leaders and 47 Mariners Under Guidance (MUG). A MUG is a freshmen that will be going on his first Summer Sea Term the following summer. Conner balanced his academics with his job of being a Section Chief Squad Leader. He received Dean’s List honors during the Spring Semester of his sophomore year.Conner James Deaton is currently in his junior year at SUNY Maritime College located in Bronx, New York. He is majoring in Marine Transportation, while pursuing a US Coast Guard Third Mates Unlimited License. He is in the regiment of cadets. Over the summer of 2015, Conner was selected to participate in a Cadet Internship with a commercial shipping company. He was chosen by International Shipholding Corporation to work aboard the M/V Texas Enterprise. The Texas Enterprise is a US flagged dry bulk carrier that operates mainly in the Gulf of Mexico. Chief Officer Kevin Kuebler says, “It has been a pleasure sailing with Cadet Deaton; he has been a valued crew member of the M/V Texas Enterprise. He has been far and away the best cadet I have ever sailed with.” This statement about Conner can give you an insight on how he will perform in the workforce after graduation. Conner is known as a very eager learner when in an unfamiliar environment. Despite the challenges he has faced in his schooling, he has always been optimistic. He can be heard saying, “One door may close, but another one opens. Why not try the new door as it may lead you to a better path through life?”
