St. Peters Fly Shop is one of the west's great fly shops and the premier fly fishing retail location in northern Colorado. My time there was an incredible, and priceless, dive into the world of small-scale specialty retail. Fly shops are highly unique retail operations. Anglers are a notoriously informed and particular group of consumers and no shop can be successful without excellent products, robust ties to the community and surrounding riparian habitats, a strong knowledge base and impeccable customer service. St. Peters has been an institution in Fort Collins, Colorado, since the early 90's, and with good reason. Their decades of success is a strong testament to the passion, expertise, and retail prowess that has been cultivated there, from the top down, since it's inception. My duties included: -Sales of technical equipment (rods, reels, waders, sunglasses, etc) apparel, media, fly tying materials, etc...-Instruction of classes including entomology, fly tying of all skill levels, destination travel, fishing techniques and much more - Guiding fly fishing trips-Public outreach in the form of volunteering with local schools, youth groups, Colorado State University, The City of Fort Collins, and local conservation organizations

Dave Duncan and Sons ltd. is a positively venerable guiding outfit. With over 40 years in operation, the family run network of camps is one of Alaskas longest-running outfitters, and one of it's most storied. While they operate different Fly Fishing camps around the state at different times of the year, my experience was limited to those on the Chosen River in western Alaska. My seasons guiding for the Duncans were perhaps the most formative of my life. Learning to coexist with a group of people from all walks of life in the middle of the wilderness for three months, and accomplish highly grueling and challenging tasks for every day of those three months, builds a surprisingly diverse set of skills and personality traits, the vast majority of which I wouldn't trade for anything. Cohesion, teamwork, ingenuity and grit were perhaps the most indelible things my years on the Chosen left me with but guiding in Alaska was profoundly life changing, no matter how you look at it.
