As an Assistant Manager my main responsibilities include but are not limited to: - Ensuring the guest experience is the main focus for the whole team, encouraging pride and passion for our food, drink and the service we provide.- Constantly review the team’s performance, coaching individuals to improve sales and meet targets.- Know our policy and specs inside out and share this knowledge with the team, ensuring they are followed at all times- Create robust shift plans that optimise contribution, increase guest satisfaction and positively influence other key metrics.- Act as a role model to my team, guiding and supporting individuals to be the best they can be.

The Odysseus mentoring project: I have recently undergone rigorous training in order to become a volunteer mentor and be provided the fantastic opportunity to get involved in the amazing work this project conducts. This project guides and supports young people at risk of offending or repeat offending, thus through referrals from youth workers, teachers, police, etc the project will pair me up with a young person for 12 months. In this time, I will attempt to build a relationship between me and the mentee which encourages self-fulfillment and social awareness, whilst also offering general support based on their specific needs such as; job searches, further or higher education, and writing CVs. This role will further enhance my communication skills and allow me to use my personality, drive and personal attributes to help children get back on the right path.

This role has allowed me to thrive and use my best qualities (leadership, communication and organisation) in all aspects of the job. While the role involves serving beverages and assisting in keeping the bar, front-of-house and toilets clean, a vital part of the role is the management of staff. Through conducting pre-shift briefings to motivate staff and ensure targets are met, training new and current staff ensuring everyone performs to their best ability and most importantly utilising everyones key skills and managing them accordingly. This means placing the right staff in the correct place to ensure the pub performs as efficiently as possible. Moreover, essential to the role is keeping up to date with new products and current promotions in order to push sales and increase profit, this requires setting incentives to staff in order to increase sales.

This volunteering position granted me the fantastic opportunity to travel to Warsaw, Poland to attend an English teaching programme called ‘Angloville’, in which Polish children aged 11-18 are sent in order to enhance their English. Throughout the 2 week programme, I was tasked with a very packed schedule in which we had one on one sessions with selected children, conversing with them, sharing cultural experiences, playing games and overall teaching them English through real life conversations and interactions. There were also activities where I became mediator in debates between two groups of Polish participants, I designed various questions on a number of interesting topics and oversaw/supervised debates between the children, in order to improve their confidence in debating in English and forming opinions about the world. Moreover, I was given the task of mentoring two participants more closely, in which I worked meticulously on creating a presentation on a topic personal to them, in which they would have to present to everyone on the programme at the end of the week. This trip was truly enriching, although, whilst it was extremely tough some days with a packed schedule, it was thoroughly enjoyable. I travelled on my own for the first time to a country completely new to me, putting myself completely out of my comfort zone into a role I had no experience in, but it was worth the stress and hard work, to exchange cultural experiences, mentor children and truly connect with them and have an impact on them that would benefit them for the rest of their lives is an experience I will never forget.
