Restoring natural functions to the ecosystem by removing invasive plants, growing native plants, supporting stream restorations, conducting land surveys, and preparing plots for planting. Developed interpretive guides of local fish to be displayed in 15 open space preserves and education events to help visitors identify fish in the creeks and gain more insights into in-stream ecology, leading the expansion of interpretive programming. Conducted and managed data for vegetation and pollinator surveys at three restored sites, resulting in published reports documenting the progress of restoration projects, including invasive plant management and native species planting at a 79-acre open space preserve to determine annual reduction rates. Expanded habitat restoration and improved fire safety by planting, watering, removing invasive species, and monitoring, leading to impactful stewardship across 2,400+ acres, 7 creeks, and 15 outdoor spaces. Managed nursery operations, including propagation, deadheading, seed collection, and seed cleaning of native and rare plant species, driving expanded habitat restoration efforts, boosting plant sales, and supporting native plant research. As a member in the SEI Climate Corp Fellowship cohort of 2023-2024, I have lead collaboration meetings with other fellows working in similar positions in governmental entities across the Bay Area and the United States. I worked to enhance resilience and decarbonization through various projects, including building electrification, project development, and community outreach. I engaged with residents, businesses, and municipal staff to collaboratively develop policies and implement projects that reduce carbon emissions and support community resilience to climate change. I built partnerships with multilingual organizations and local businesses for City programs on decarbonization and climate resilience. This effort resulted in a community-wide mapping tool available for City staff and the regional energy provider to visualize all community partners and stakeholders in sustainability. I worked on providing increased and equitable access to alternative modes of transportation with the income-qualified E-Bike Voucher Program, resulting in over 150 applications and 86 vouchers distributed to Mountain View residents. I formulated policy recommendations by conducting comprehensive research on plant-based dining options available in 150 restaurants. This research led to the City's Plant-Based Eating Program, which aims to reduce consumption-derived emissions and support local restaurants in developing sustainable business practices. I have also coordinated with local organizations to host interactive workshops and the Electric Vehicle Showcase for the City’s Earth and Arbor Day Celebration. These efforts resulted in a total attendance of 1500 participants and increased community engagement with local environmental and sustainability programming. My efforts tripled attendance from previous years and introduced a new component for community involvement, a photo contest. I have researched residential permits for electrification projects to inform the development of new reach codes. This information was used to make policy recommendations presented to the City Council and informed the Sustainability and Resiliency Division's efforts in developing equitable policies in building decarbonization.

I researched nutrient cycling in agricultural systems in the Central Valley and Salinas Valley. I implemented sustainable soil management practices, including vermicompost and cover crop applications, to reduce environmental impacts while improving crop yields. I analyzed and documented 345 monthly data points from field work related to cover crop and vermicompost applications aimed at enhancing soil preservation practices for walnut orchards and crop fields. These efforts led to measurable outcomes in increased microbial activity in nutrient cycling, improved soil fertility, and reduced nitrogen leaching. I standardized laboratory procedures for active carbon analysis, specifically focusing on POXC Analysis. This work resulted in developing a published paper and my leadership in training researchers on POXC Analysis procedures. I managed, calibrated, and utilized lab equipment such as pH meters, spectrometers, costech instruments, gas chromatographs, and dissolved oxygen analyzers. I organized data collected from the field to determine the sustainability and efficiency of agricultural practices regarding soil preservation. Additionally, I created, standardized, and titrated stock solutions as reagents in chemical analysis procedures, such as ammonium/nitrate analysis and POXC analysis. I trained incoming junior specialists, PhD students, and undergraduate research assistants on laboratory and field collection procedures. I also supervised two undergraduate research assistants in a vermicompost project and led leaf collections and analysis from walnut orchards. I also aided in walnut harvest for lab analysis.

I provided educational, noncommercial, public-service radio programming by actively engaging with a diverse range of topics including science, politics, agriculture, and culture. In an effort to broaden the scope of public affairs communications, I incorporated ecological topics and spotlighted local community organizations and researchers. Over the course of 25 weekly Public Affairs radio shows, I focused on the ecology and history of a local watershed. Through interviews and research compilation, I effectively communicated scientific outreach about UC Davis research, which significantly expanded the program’s reach and impact. As a result, the show attracted a growing listenership interested in ecology, science, and local environmental issues. Past show themes include the history of the environmental justice movement at UC Davis, the importance of community research along the Putah Creek wildlife corridor, and Indigenous fire ecology (cultural burning).

Paterna, Valencian Community, Spain

I researched atmospheric chemical processes that affect air quality and health using atmospheric simulation chambers. I supported public administrations and businesses in Spain and the European Union in implementing air management policies. I collaborated on a coronavirus transmission analysis project that examined risks in non-ventilated classrooms. This project resulted in the completion of a published paper and the implementation of indoor air quality monitoring in Spanish public schools. I computed and corrected over 8000 sensor data points from a 24-hour time series using Excel and MATLAB. These data were organized into graphics for a study awaiting publication. I conducted preliminary research on exhaust and non-exhaust emissions from automobiles and data policy for future studies on small particulate matter and its health implications. I initiated maintenance and atmospheric chemistry experiments in the European Photoreactor (EUPHORE) to observe how different European Union policies on non-exhaust emissions would impact air quality in the Mediterranean. I wrote reports that combined the main findings from the preliminary research and results from tests to inform policymakers about the expected outcomes of air quality policy. Additionally, I constructed filters to monitor air quality at various intersections within the Valencia metropolitan area. I extracted samples from these filters and utilized spectrometry to analyze pollutants captured.

I engaged students in learning, practicing, and modeling an ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable agriculture and food system. I strived to build equitable food systems by cultivating local initiatives, leadership, experiential learning, and inclusive communities. I designed educational materials highlighting sustainability achievements for six local BIPOC and LGBTQ+ farmers. This effort led to the development of website extensions and posters used for sustainable agriculture youth programs. I also designed posters and a website extension featuring influential figures as a medium to educate UC Davis students about people of color and LGBTQ+ people in agriculture. I held meetings with the Student Farm lead, community members, farmers, and other sustainable agriculture interns to gather information and stories for compiling into educational documents. I utilized online Adobe Creative Cloud software and graphic design tools to create seven poster projects highlighting different local farmers and their contributions to sustainable agriculture. Finally, I presented the finalized educational posters to the UC Davis College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences administration.

Managed and organized reservations to maximize the number of covers and accommodate for customer requests, such as wheelchair accessible seating options. Organized and managed to-go orders from phone calls, DoorDash, and Uber Eats, which contributed $1500+ worth of sales. Kept inventory of wine and food items for the restaurant management to ensure proper quantities of popular items in addition to minimizing costs. Upheld public safety procedures and protocols in correspondence with the Santa Clara Health Department's COVID-19 response by leading employee trainings on best practices to ensure customer and staff safety during.

Achieved youth engagement with the City Government through independently organizing events and seminars catered toward environmental education. Developed a creek walk through a partnership with the Public Works Department and the Santa Clara Valley Water District that aimed to engage youth with the local ecology of a restored stream. Organized creek clean-ups targeted toward high school aged students, which focused on zero-waste and waste-reduction education. Initiated tree planting projects with Campbell's Public Works Department to engage other students in the Youth Commission in understanding the importance of urban forestry. Presented the outcomes of these projects to the Campbell City Council, the Campbell Union School District, and the Campbell Union High School District.
