During my time at SA Water I undertook a feasibility study of assessing the capability and requirements of Adelaide's three metro wastewater treatment plants to reduce their power consumption. The primary aim was to achieve this by increasing the reliance on electricity generated from on-site produced biogas that is combusted in combined heat and power gas engines.Key aspects of the project included:- Utilising excel to perform calculations using raw data to determine: thermodynamic performanceof gas engines, sludge and gas flow rates, composition of treated sludge, performance of anaerobicdigesters and modelling future predicted inflow based on population growth.- Determining parameters affecting plants’ ability to increase biogas-generated electricity.- Conducting optimisation feasibility assessments to determine infrastructure requirements toincrease power generation using biogas.- Evaluating effectiveness of trade-waste use at Bolivar over its one-year trial period.- Making recommendations to improve onsite-energy production improvement for the three plants- Presenting the findings and recommendations of the feasibility study to Assets Management
