Marketing Manager

Red Bank, New Jersey, United States

My time at GoToro enabled me to experiment and execute in almost every aspect of marketing. The company started off as an HR Tech company called Fusion Recruiting Labs, with some software and job board products angled toward the trucking and logistics industry.I concentrated on social media marketing and digital advertising for B2B when I joined. Over a short period of time, I was promoted to Marketing Manager and touched on every aspect of our marketing engine. This included building a website from scratch for our B2B business, setting up our marketing nurture campaigns, managing trade show exhibitions, writing content for organic traffic, creating sales enablement materials, and, in my later years at the company, diving into partnership management and some UI/UX work for product updates.Put simply, I was doing much more than what I had initially applied for. But I learned a lot about what worked and what didn’t in all aspects of our marketing. During my tenure, my marketing team varied widely in size, going from a team of four marketers working with the CMO to only me working directly with the CEO. As the team continued to evolve, I was responsible for identifying and leading all marketing activities.Throughout this time, the company saw wildly successful growth alongside a fair share of setbacks. Activities included converting an inbound lead generation process from nothing to a machine that delivered a consistent lead flow, as well as identifying and promoting in-person events that generated new revenue every time we exhibited. I’m proud of the work I accomplished while at the company, but I recognize there are always aspects of the job that could have been better. To say this job’s thrills and stresses were a rollercoaster ride would be an understatement. But I came out of my nearly four-year stay at the company with a clear idea of what I enjoyed working on and some ideas for where I wanted to go next.

Associate Producer / Digital Studio Resource Manager

New York, New York, United States

The time I spent at JWT was full of some of the most memorable projects I've ever worked on. My role involved learning from, supporting, and occasionally leading various projects in our digital studio. This included assisting with timelines and resource management for website development projects with customers like Grand Marnier, banner ad development and creation for J&J brands, and creating digital concepts for pitches and clients like Raising Canes.I learned a lot about the digital ecosystem, from hearing the project request to outlining the scope and cost with account managers to executing on the client's wishes with creative directors and development teams. It was a privilege to learn from and work with such talented people at JWT.My time at JWT ended after almost a year after I chose to leave due to the commute taking its toll on my wellbeing. I was spending roughly 3–4 hours a day commuting to and from the office. While I enjoyed this job, my budget didn't allow me to move closer to New York City, but I knew that I wanted to continue working on digital productions and growing brands in the future. Whether that was in an agency again or getting closer to a specific brand in-house.

Computer Lab Supervisor

Tampa, Florida, United States

To be honest, there shouldn't be a ton to say about this role. I needed a job during university to help me get by. I saw an email or flyer somewhere saying that the campus was looking for students to work in the computer labs. That job was basically just helping people with the computer when they needed help, making sure the printers were always stocked with paper and ink, and cleaning out the occasional jam. Not very different than helping out grandparents with their tech issues, and something I already had a lot of experience with.My manager at the time approached me to take over as a supervisor for this role after about one semester in that position. I applied for the position and was accepted. My role then became one part training other people how to fix some lab computer and printer issues, and another part creating the shift schedule and checking on the labs to make sure people were there and nothing was broken. This position taught me a lot about ownership, and in a way having pride in my work. If the labs weren’t functioning properly, that reflected poorly on my and my team. So I had the chance to introduce and train for different procedures and events that may occur to ensure everything ran smoothly. When I wasn't actively helping someone with their tech issue, I was using my time in the lab to focus on classwork or read technology or advertising media publications, like The Verge, Techcrunch, MIT Technology Review, or AdAge. I couldn't have asked for a better job on campus.

Digital Production Intern

New York, New York, United States

J. Walter Thompson seemed like a stretch goal for me when I applied for an internship there. It was one of the oldest advertising agencies in the world and could be viewed as the pinnacle of creativity in some ways. I certainly viewed it that way. During my time with the Digital Production team at JWT, I gained hands-on experience with some of the most creative and intelligent people I've ever gotten to work with. I learned and practiced project management with multiple departments and stakeholders, the importance of a fully baked brief for technical teams, and how to throw ideas at the wall until something stuck, then try to run with it. The end of the summer cut this internship short, but I knew I would want to return after I graduated from college.Spoiler alert: I did.

Social Media Intern

St Petersburg, Florida, United States

My time at IRONMAN taught me a ton about social media content creation, audience engagement, and how important a community can be for a brand. During this internship, I was responsible for proposing content strategies to the in-house marketing team, and developing the content for IRONMAN's European social media presence, primarily on Twitter (RIP), Instagram, and Facebook. I remember this internship experience fondly because it was one of the busiest times of my life, with training as a collegiate athlete for 20 hours a week (DII swimming), interning at the IRONMAN HQ a few days a week, attending class while I was studying for two majors, and having a social life outside of all of that. So outside of any hands-on marketing skills, my time at IRONMAN was a masterclass in prioritization and time management.

Digital Marketing Intern

Eatontown, New Jersey, United States

lotus823 gave me my first taste of digital marketing and advertising in the real world. I was able to learn about the fundamentals of digital marketing beyond what I would learn in a classroom while at university. This was taught and learned through various projects around content strategy, content creation, SEO analysis, and market research. I remember one project was to create some content around John Oliver's take on the FIFA scandal occurring at that time, and I thought to myself that marketing could be pretty fun in the long run if watching TV could be counted as a form of work. After about 7 months with this organization, both in the office and remotely while attending university, my internship came to an end, and it was time to look for the next team to learn from.
