Using advanced FEA (Finite Element Analysis) to tackle design problems. I have integrated the use of FEA into the design process at Crossland so that new designs can be informed by the results and iterated towards the design criteria.

I lead a KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) collaborative research programme between Crossland Tankers and Queen's University Belfast. The aim of the project was to use advanced multi-physics FEA simulation techniques to optimise a tanker chassis for strength and weight.The project lasted two years and gained me experience in a wide range of engineering theory and application.Firstly I gained a wide range of knowledge in Ls-Dyna which was the main tool in developing the tanker chassis model. It included structural elements, tyres and suspension, SPH liquid sloshing in the tank and the ability to perform braking and turning manoeuvres. This allowed us to explore the stresses throughout the chassis under a wide range of load cases.Next, Material Characterisation through testing of material samples in the QUB Labs which allowed me to create and validate bespoke material models for use in my FEA simulations. Finally, I designed a testing programme and operated a data acquisition device to record strain and acceleration data used to validate my chassis model through correlation of results.In the end the project received a top marks grade for technical excellence from the project evaluators at Innovate UK who run the KTP
