EuroSDR (European Spatial Data Research) is a European organisation established by the International Treaty, as OEEPE, in 1953 in Paris in accordance with a recommendation passed by the Council of the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation. The spatial data research interests of European countries are represented through the membership in EuroSDR of national organisations from their production and research sectors.The result is a network of delegates, from European Geographic Information organisations and research institutes, effectively and practically addressing Europe's spatial data research requirements.Collaborative research projects address the acquisition, management and delivery of spatial data and services while international workshops and courses, in collaboration with related organisations, address key issues in a timely and focussed manner.The vision of EuroSDR is to be the European research platform for National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies, Academic Institutes, the Private Sector, Industry and User Groups on issues related to the implementation of technology developments with respect to optimising the provision (collection processing, storage, maintenance, visualisation, dissemination and use) of reference information (data serving as a spatial framework for organisations involved in monitoring, management and development) in a Spatial Data Infrastructure context.

I have recently joined the Department of Geography at Maynooth University as the lecturer in Remote Sensing. I lecture on RS modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level and also have links with a number of the research centres at the university - contact me for postgraduate opportunities in the spatial sciences.

The Remote Sensing and Earth Observation Working Group has been established to represent those members of the Geomatics community that work with spatial data captured by earth orbiting satellites. The primary goal of the WG is to develop a, 'critical mass' in RS with members in the SCSI. This will be achieved by:- Increasing the profile of RS technology and data with Geomatics professionals.- Providing guidance on best practice for use of the technology to encourage adoption.- Introducing the potential benefits arising from the application of RS data to other professions in the SCSI.- Attracting new members from outside the traditional Geomatics recruiting pool.Increased application of RS data in the property sector will enable capacity building, allow Ireland to better leverage its investment in ESA and also assist Irish companies and organisations when competing in national and international funding calls.

I joined the School of Surveying and Construction Management at DIT to teach the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry component on the BSc in Geographic Science. I contributed to the GIS, 3D Modelling, adjustment and topographic survey practice modules on a number of other undergraduate and postgraduate programmes including spatial planning and construction management.

I represent Ireland on the management committee of 'OPTIMISE' - COST Action ES1309, a collaboration between 28 EU & NN countries investigating recent advances combining satellites, RPAS and hyperspectral sensors to provide unprecedented opportunities for high spatial, spectral and multi-angular near-ground Earth observations.

I was employed as a post-doctoral research fellow at the NCG. Our research focussed on Earth Observation data, Mobile Mapping Systems and Unmanned Aerial Systems for terrestrial and marine environments. I lectured in both GIS and Remote Sensing at undergraduate and post-graduate level. This post also required me to • Act as PI and Co-PI on a number of projects ranging from 3 months to 2 years duration. • Collaborate with industry and government bodies.• Participate in the creation of survey guidelines/standards.• Develop funding proposals and manage project budgets.• Represent the centre both nationally and internationally.

Thesis title : Calculating and Assessing Mobile Mapping System Point Density for Roadside Infrastructure Surveys. This PhD by research focussed on identifying innovative methods for assessing the performance and optimising the configuration and placement of mobile sensors. I engaged with national and international stakeholders and also industry partners throughout this project. Upon completion I worked closely with the Maynooth Commercialisation Office investigating the possibility of patenting the software developed.

I manage the NSD QA staff to create a multimedia historical simulator. I work for this company in my free time. This package is used in classrooms at the high-school level and college level across the U.S. It is even used to train U.S. Army Officers. It is also one of the few software packages accepted by the Gettysburg National Park Store. This involves:• Managing 12 QA staff to meet development deadlines. • Thorough testing of software, including: UI, Database, Environment Modelling, User Experience.• Working with developers to release a solid product.• Follow on software maintenance and webpage content management. http://www.norbsoftdev.net/

My role as treasurer involved overseeing the Institution's finances. The Treasurer's responsibilities include:• Preparing the budget at the start of each financial year.• Ensuring that all staff and bills are paid on time.• Ensuring compliance with all revenue requirements. • Dealing with the auditor to prepare the end of year reports.• Presenting the accounts to the members at the annual general meeting.

As Editor I was required to keep abreast of the state-of-the-art in the field of Geomatics to inform our members of any current trends. Other duties included • Attending council meetings to keep abreast of current developments.• Liaising with authors.• Designing and editing the quarterly IIS publication.• Reviewing paper submissions.• Targeting advertisers to cover production and distribution costs.

As Membership Secretary I was required to:• Attend council meetings to help shape Institution policy.• Play a role in council administration.• Monitor membership payments.• Arrange professional interviews.• Monitor and arrange CPD for members. • Create a discount scheme for members including pensions, car insurance and health insurance.

My role as Land Surveyor and GIS Analyst in the parks division was to capture, process and manage all forms of spatial data. This entailed:• GIS database design, population, maintenance and spatial analysis.• Property registration, boundary surveys and civil-engineering works. • Liaising with residents groups, local government representatives and contractors.
