Conceived and drove the instantiation of the Client Based Authentication Technology (CBAT) research initiative which explores how new technologies can be brought to the authentication problem creating a solution that is both more secure and much more usable.Core member of Intel’s Security Architecture Forum which involved defining security strategy for Intel products, reviewing security claims of future product features, examining new product features for potential security impacts prior to product implementation, and assisted in developing resolutions for any such identified impacts.Represented Intel in several standards bodies including the Liberty Alliance, Kantara Initiative and the OASIS Security Services Technical Committee (SSTC). Contributor to the Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) Version 2.0 specifications. Co-Editor of the Liberty Alliance’s Discovery Service Specification. Editor and team lead for the Liberty Alliance’s Advanced Client specification family.Developed and published open-source toolkit implementing numerous Liberty Alliance Identity-based Web Services Framework (ID-WSF) protocols supporting both Java based server instantiations of services and C++ based service clients as well as an extensive testing framework for testing the implementation of service features. This turned out to be especially useful during interoperability testing of the specifications prior to standardization.Spoke on security and identity topics at a number of industry and academic conferences including RSA, European Identity Conference, Cloud Identity Summit, Intel Developer Forum, ACM Workshop on Digital Identity Management, Burton Catalyst, and the Nokia Developer Conference. The enhancements envisioned in SIF later became part of the Liberty specifications.Lead Architect for AOL's Magic Carpet Network effort directed towards creating a web services vision for cooperative service providers. Created a vision for an Identity Framework which supported multiple cooperative Identity Providers and Service Providers in a distributed network that supported strong user privacy controls while also enabling easy integration across providers. Much of this work was contributed into the Liberty Alliance and is reflected in many of the concepts and capabilities of those standards. Ported the tool to more than 10 different UNIX platforms including i386 UNIX, DG-UX, HP-UX, AIX, SunOS and Solaris.Led substantial revisions to the Rubix Relational Database Management System including adding Orange Book B2 level security features, a total re-architecture of the file storage system underlying the DBMS, A re-implementation of the Muti-Version Time Stamp Ordering (MVTSO) System (an optimistic database updating model that does not require DBMS locks) to support abortable transactions and eliminate covert channels. Led the design and implementation of an ANSI compliant SQL parser front end impelmentation. Added Orange Book B1 level security features to System V and BSD UNIX kernels. Areas of responsibility included the system call interface, inter-process communications interfaces (shared memory, semaphores, etc.) and covert channel analysis.Supported communications protocols debugging across a variety of protocols including SNA and UUCP. Lots of JCL and PL/1 on the mainframe, lots of C and Borne shell scripting on the UNIX systems. Claims to fame include developing an automated file transfer service which enabled users to initiate background file transfers using simple English like commands and giving the system administrator control over the number of simultaneous file transfers (which, at that time, had a significant negative impact on system performance). That system became part of the standard UNIX distribution across all agency systems and was still being used 10 years later (my last time of reserve duty).Found a security flaw in the way that data files were being transferred between the mainframe and UNIX systems which enabled any remote user to escalate themselves to root privileges -- even if they did not have an account. Designed and implemented a much safer replacement system which still allowed automated, unauthenticated file transfers from the mainframe, but restricted their ability to be used for privilege escalation.
