I was responsible for ensuring that the organisation's brand was always in the public eye. This was done by turning astronomical and scientic information into material suitable for public dissemination, and releasing it via press notices, member newsletters, and social media.

I was responsible for a number of staff members and for the day-to-day running of the organisation and its activities including a monthly public lecture series, biannual evening classes, regular public telescope nights, magazine distribution, school visitations, and general administration.In addition, I directly undertook marketing and public relations activities in order to enhance the organisation's visibility to the general public. I also did some HTML/PHP coding to develop content for Astronomy Ireland's web presence.

I write a monthly column for city-wide distribution in the Dublin Informer newspaper. In order to keep the column interesting to readers, I write about current events, visible sights, and some extra background to that information. Writing this column requires a good deal of skill to ensure that the "science" communicated to the general public is accurate, understandable, and enjoyable.

As I have a passion for science outreach I thoroughly enjoy meeting scientists and helping to get the general public to understand what they do. I do this with Scibernia, an Irish science radio show and podcast, where I talk about science (space science and astronomy in particular) and interview some of the best-known scientists from Ireland and abroad. Some of the people I have interviewed include Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, discoverer of pulsars, and Dr Peter Gallagher, head of the Astrophysics Group at Trinity College Dublin and established scientist with both NASA and ESA.

Throughout this fixed-term position I was placed in charge of the running of the first year undergraduate laboratory in the School of Physical Sciences. This largely involved setting up and taking down equipment and experiments. As several different classes with approximately 100 students could be present, it was also very important to plan out each laboratory session to ensure the students had a positive and effective learning environment. Also involved was the development of extra material and tasks for some experiments, equipment repair, and ordering in new equipment.Aside from working with undergraduate students, I also assisted in training science teachers on training programmes, and worked with Transition Year students to give them a fun and exciting perspective of physics.

During this short-term position I was tasked with enhancing and developing the web presence of the School of Physical Sciences, DCU. Doing so largely involved using HTML. I liaised with members of staff and with students to gain a wider understanding of the School, and ensured that the resulting content was of a high quality that provided the reader with correct and understandable information.

In this intern position I was given the task of preparing raw data and analysing the resulting science images. The work focused on the nature of the massive blue star HD15570, and data was in the form of high-resolution échelle spectra. For data reduction, I used the NOAO Image Reduction and Analysis Facility (IRAF) on a Linux-based system. This position also formed the basis of my Final Year Project at DCU.
