Project Engineer
CurrentI have served / am serving as the project engineer (design and coordination lead) on a variety of mixed-used, multi-family, and commercial projects including wood, Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), Infinity system (CFMF), and composite steel, many of which are supported by post-tensioned and mildly reinforced podiums on drilled pier or spread footings.
Graduate Thesis
I developed a design process for cross-laminated timber (CLT) buildings in high-seismic regions as they would be designed in practice. The design follows ASCE 7-10, NDS 2015, and the CLT Handbook. AxisVM software was used to run a non-linear overturning analysis on the design. The main feature of the design is an anchor-tie down system used to resist global overturning, while also being able to ignore local overturning of shear walls, thus saving costs in detailing, construction time, and materials.
Statics Teaching Assistant
I ran three statics help sessions a week where I assisted students with homework and any statics-related questions they had. I also assisted in grading and class organization, and occasionally lectured.
Intern
I improved simulations of near-fault pulse-like ground motions for use in a study relating ground motion simulation accuracy to building damage.I also spent time developing building stock reports for various countries. The purpose of the reports was to provide a brief summary of a country's building stock and past earthquake history that would prepare an engineer for a reconnaissance trip after an earthquake.
Structural Engineering Intern
My main role was to generate PLS-CADD models of Xcel Energy transmission lines. Responsibilities included modeling wood pole structures, creating plan and profile drawings, and assigning information to the models based on surveying data and any available and obtainable information.
Nssbc 2014 Colorado School Of Mines Steel Bridge Team
I was a member of the 8-person Colorado School of Mines Steel Bridge Team. We placed 1st overall and 1st in lightness at the Rocky Mountain Regionals. We placed 17th (out of 50) at Nationals in Akron Ohio, which is the second best result Mines has ever achieved. My main roles were the structural design of the bridge and overseeing fabrication.
Student Ambassador
I gave private tours of the Mines Campus, along with working at Preview Mines and Discover Mines (which help introduce groups of prospective students to the school).
Undergraduate Research
I worked on a paper analyzing the characteristics of the underground construction and tunneling workforce. The results were presented at the 2014 North American Tunneling Conference.I also laid the groundwork for an interactive Google Earth application that would show users various major tunneling projects throughout the United States.
Summer Field Session
Summer Field Session - 3 Week Course:- Chaining over level and uneven ground- Differential leveling with a hand level and an engineer's scale- Turning angles with a Leica Total Station- Measuring vertical and horizontal distances with a Leica Total Station- Lot surveying, then importing the survey into AutoCad to create an existing surface and proposed house lot.
Structural Engineering Intern
I worked on various projects within large-scale power plant retrofits including steel takeoffs, revisions tracking, and two concrete transformer foundation designs. I modeled the foundations in STAAD.Pro with hand calculations and AutoCAD drawings to supplement and validate the results
Drafting Intern
I drafted telecommunications site overviews, tower views, antenna arrays and structural details in AutoCAD.
Team Leader
I led a group of at-risk high school AmeriCorps members in building and maintenance at and around the Goodman Community Center grounds in Madison, WI.
