Investigating the effects of pharmaceuticals on fresh water daphia• During the internship in the laboratory of Dr. Grintzalis the focus is on the assessment of toxicological responses of daphnids to pharmaceuticals.• Responsible for handling the animals; daphnids, and algae (which are used as food source for daphnids) and perform acute and chronic toxicity exposures to pharmaceuticals.• Selected a “cocktail” of pharmaceuticals used to assess its impact on the physiology of daphnids.• Assessed the activity of key enzymes relevant to metabolism (i.e. galactosidase, lipase, protease), phosphate (phosphatases) and response to xenobiotics (glutathione-S-transferase). • Processing the results and analysing the data with statistics (in Excel and GraphPad) revealed distinct patterns due to the cocktail mixture.• Isolated samples for metabolomic analyses and performed transgenerational exposure which would reveal the imprinting of the stress over several generations.• Holistic approaches would reveal in more detail the metabolic perturbations induced (work pending analysis).
