Conrad Johnston is director and founder of Studio Johnston, an architectural and interior design studio in Surry Hills, Sydney. The medium sized practice has won numerous awards, both nationally and internationally, including the AIA NSW Architecture Aaron Bolot Award for Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing and Award for The Rochford. Studio Johnston has been regularly awarded by local councils for design excellence, including Randwick council’s best apartment building for The Kensington, The Stables and The Solis Apartment and won numerous design excellent projects in the City of Sydney, Bayside and Parramatta Council. Conrad is also on the DRP panel for City of Canada Bay and their representative to assess State Significant Projects across Sydney. The Studio has received widespread publications in architectural journals and print including Houses, Belle, Inside Out, Grand Designs and The Local Project. Over the past 17 years, the practice has worked on over 200 commercial, public, education, single and multi-residential projects. These projects have ranged from boutique and large scale apartment buildings to single residences, early learning centres, hotels, commercial fitouts and public amenities. Our studio is currently focused on expanding our multi-residential area of our practice. Studio Johnston are currently working with some of Sydney’s leading developers and Councils including Frasers, Barua, The Yard 120C City of Sydney and Ku-ring-gai Council, on projects such as Treehouse at MacPark, Amici in Summer Hill, Waranara Early Learning Centre, Surry Hills Hotel and the Paramount Hotel. Conrad’s track record speaks for itself. His design philosophy is based on people, narrative and place. His aesthetic is a balance of bold design, refined details and earthy material choices. Conrad’s vision integrates the many elements of architecture - light, landscape, form and spatial quality – into a cohesive whole that’s much more than the sum of its parts.
